Canyons 77, Santa Monica 73 (women)

Monica Freidl scored 21 pts and grabbed 18 rebs, leading College of the Canyons to a 77-73 win over #14-ranked and first-place Santa Monica Wednesday evening in a WSC-South game in Santa Clarita.

After the lead changed hands 10 times, Canyons (14-10, 4-5) took a 56-54 lead midway through the second half and managed to make it last the rest of the way. Canyons pushed the lead to as many as 8 points following a 3-pointer by Nayiri Aslanian that made it 74-66, the largest lead either team held all game.

Santa Monica (16-7, 7-2) cut the deficit to two points with 1:03 left after Aniese Palmore made two free throws, then stole the ball back near midcourt. She got the ball to Briah Nelson, who was fouled. The foul - by COC's Julie Ilsby - was ruled a flagrant foul, so even after Nelson made the two free throws Santa Monica retained possession. Then Nelson scored on a driving lay-up to make it 74-72 with 1:03 remaining.

But Santa Monica never quite caught up. Amber Evans went to the free throw line three times in the final minute, and each time she made one of two free throws. The final one, with 20.5 seconds left, pushed Canyons' lead to 77-73 and clinched the victory.

The first half was a most entertaining 20 minutes, with the lead changing hands 8 times and the teams combining for 85 points. One sequence saw each team make three 3-pointers in less than a minute as the teams traded baskets. Canyons took a 44-41 halftime lead after Freidl and Hannah Green each scored baskets in the final minute before intermission.

Santa Monica lost despite a triple-double by Palmore, who finished with 12 pts, a team-high 10 rebs and a game-high 11 asts. Oshaela Gray scored 16 pts and added 2 rebs, 2 asts and 5 steals. Nelson had 11 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals. Hannah Naefke came off the bench for 10 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts and 4 steals.

For Canyons, Freidl had game-highs with her 21 pts and 18 rebs plus 2 assists, 3 blocked shots and a steal. Green also had a huge game with 11 pts, 9 rebs, 4 asts and 8 blocked shots. Jordan Oster had 10 pts, including 3 threes, and Aslanian came off the bench for 10 pts. Evans had 9 pts, 10 rebs, 5 asts, 2 steals and a blocked shot.
