PF Conroy Lester scored 25 pts and added 8 rebs as Bakersfield ended its season with a 60-57 win over LA Valley in the WSC-South tournament Thursday to reach double digits in the win column.
Bakersfield (10-15) started the game with an 8-0 run, which would turn out to be the largest lead of the game for either team. LA Valley (5-19) rallied to tie the game at 26 and take a lead moments later on a 3-pointer by SG Ginno Soliman. A free throw by PG Lance Bailey made it 30-26.
Bakersfield took a 32-30 lead at halftime after a 3-pointer by PG Chad Clark. Valley tied it early in the second half on a jumper by Ctr Alex Smith and the lead went back and forth the rest of the game.
Ctr Damian Robinson broke a 54-all tie with a free throw with 3:01 remaining. Clark added a floater off the backboard to make it 57-54. Bakersfield clung to a 58-57 lead as the clock approached the one-minute mark.
Robinson scored on a reverse lay-up for Bakersfield to make it 60-57, and the Renegades got the ball back with under a minute to play. But a turnover with 26 seconds left gave Valley a chance to rally.
Valley actually had several chances to tie the score. But SF Andrew Estes and PF Eddie La Torre each missed 3-point tries. After Bakersfield SG Ed Daniels missed a pair of free throws, the Monarchs had one last chance but Bailey stepped on the sideline just before releasing a shot that hit the rim twice and missed, finally ending Valley's comeback bid.
Lester led all scorers with his 25 pts, though he was the only Bakersfield player to score in double digits. Robinson and SF Duncan Schramm scored 9 pts each and Clark had 8. Daniels had just 4 pts but grabbed a team-high 11 rebs.
For Valley, La Torre had 13 pts and added game-highs of 19 rebs and 7 steals. Bailey also had 9 pts and added 9 rebs, 3 steals and a game-high 7 asts. Soliman haad 13 pts and Estes had 10.
