Chaffey 95, Antelope Valley 79

SG Anthony Cammon had 20 pts and spurred a second-half spurt that led #9 Chaffey (18-8, 9-4) past host #15 Antelope Valley (15-13, 6-7), 95-79, Wednesday night in a key Foothill Conference game in Lancaster.

The score was tied at 48 early in the second half, but then Chaffey went on a 23-6 run to take a 71-54 lead and command of the game with 8:35 left in the second half. AVC never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Until then, it was close all the way. Chaffey got a 3-pointer from PG Cornell Jenkins and a short jumper from Ctr Geoffrey Harrison to take a 5-0 lead just 1:19 into the game. But after a timeout by AVC coach Dieter Horton, the Marauders rallied to tie it 9-9.

The rest of the first half, Chaffey held a short lead most of the time but couldn't pull away. A Cammon 3-pointer made it 20-16 Chaffey, and the Panthers also led by four at 23-19 and 29-25, but a 3-pointer by SF Donald Williams tied the score at 33. Chaffey took 2-point leads at 35-33 and 37-35, but another Williams 3-pointer in the final minute of the half gave AVC its first - and only - lead of the night, 38-37, which is where things stood at the break.

Chaffey went back in front on a Cammon 3-pointer early in the second half, and pushed its lead to seven points at 48-41 after PF Zach Von Pertz scored on an inbounds play, prompting another AVC timeout. But when play resumed, the Marauders again rallied, tying the score at 48 on a driving lay-up by Williams.

After that, however, Chaffey just pulled away. A 3-pointer by Cammon gave Chaffey its largest lead of the game to that point at 60-52, and then SF Dario Jokic scored on a putback to make it 62-52. Then consecutive 3-pointers by PF Jamal Veal, Cammon and Jenkins pushed Chaffey's lead to 17 at 71-54 with 8:35 left. And this time AVC had no answer, and never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Cammon led Chaffey with 20 pts, including 4 threes, and also had 3 steals. Jenkins had a superb game with 17 pts on 7-for-9 from the floor and also dished out 4 asts. Ctr Mo Hughley just missed a double-double with 14 pts and 9 rebs, and SF Matt Wallace added 12 pts on 4 3-pointers.

For AVC, Williams scored a career-high 30 pts, 19 in the first half, and had 4 threes. SG Nick Bennett had 15 pts and 7 asts. But no other Marauder scored in double figures.

The win clinches at least third place for Chaffey, which has a chance to tie for second place when it hosts Mt. San Jacinto Friday night. AVC falls to 15-13 overall and 6-7 in conference, and must win Friday at Victor Valley to finish .500 in conference play.
