In their third meeting of the season, #3 San Francisco (26-5, 10-2) finally managed to beat #1 Ohlone (26-3, 10-2), posting an 84-76 victory at CCSF to claim a share of the Coast Conference North Division championship.
CCSF jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead, pushed the margin to 24 early in the second half, and held off several late Ohlone charges to get the win. The Renegades cut the margin to as few as 7 points at 69-62 with just under 3 minutes left, but that was as close as they would get.
The win means the teams are co-champions in the ultra-competitive Coast North. Ohlone previously defeated CCSF in a conference game at Ohlone and in the final of the Delta Holiday Tourney at Stockton.
Ohlone actually held a 10-5 lead early in the game, sparked by a pair of early 3-pointers by SF Patrick Collier. But CCSF got a three from SF Justin Holmes and a putback basket by Ctr Stanley Harris to tie the game, and went ahead on a basket by PF Andre Davis.
And beginning with that spurt, CCSF outscored Ohlone, 34-9, the rest of the first half. CCSF scored the last 6 points of the half on a baseline drive by SF Robert Owens, a pair of free throws by SG Cornell Little John and a putback basket by PF Brandon Wiley to make it 39-19.
Early in the second half, CCSF pushed the margin to 24 at 45-21 before Ohlone began to rally. The Renegades scored the next 8 points to make it 45-29, only to see CCSF push the lead back into the twenties at 54-33. But Ohlone kept chipping away, and got the CCSF lead down to 12 at 62-50 with 7:39 left.
The Rams still held a double-digit lead until threes by SG Allen Hester and PG Bert Whittington, sandwiched around a CCSF free throw, made it 69-60. Then Whittington scored on a teardrop shot to make it 69-62.
But that was as close as Ohlone would get. A three by SG Marcio Lassiter gave CCSF some breathing room, making it 72-62. And though some spotty free throw shooting kept CCSF from pulling away, the lead never got below 8 again.
For CCSF, Owens came off the bench to score a team-high 18 pts, including 4 threes, and dished out 4 asts. Wiley also came off the bench and had a huge game with 15 pts and 9 rebs. Lassiter added 11 pts and 5 asts. PG Ron Manigault scored just 3 points, all on free throws, but had an excellent floor game with 5 asts, 2 steals and a team-best 15 rebs.
For Ohlone, Hester had a game-high 21 pts, including 3 threes. SG Willis Gardner came off the bench to add 16 pts and 4 asts. Ctr Jermaine Smith had 13 pts, 8 rebs and 7 blocked shots, and Whittington chipped in with 11 pts and 5 asts before fouling out late in the game. But the Renegades shot just 30% from the floor for the game, including an anemic 23.5% in the first half.
