#11 College of the Canyons (17-8, 10-1 in WSC-S) made 9 of their first 10 shots of the second half to break open a relatively close game and romp to a 100-68 win over visiting Glendale (15-11, 5-6) Wednesday night. The win gives COC its second consecutive WSC-South Division title.
Early on, it was Glendale who looked like the first-place team as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a three by SF Jovan Jester and a basket by SG Antony Phillips. And even after COC tied teh game on a three by SF Carlton Spencer and a basket by PF Cedric Davis, Glendale went back ahead 10-5 and finally 13-7 after a basket by PF Durwin Williams. They extended their lead to 16-9 on another three by Jester a few minutes later.
But from then on, the game belonged to COC. The Cougars would overcome that early deficit, tying the game on a jumper by Spencer at 18-18 midway through the first half. Then Ctr Andrew Morris scored on a putback to give COC its first (and only) lead; the Cougars would soon pull away and build a double-digit lead. A three by Spencer made it 47-37, and at the half COC led 49-39 after Phillips scored for Glendale just before the halftime buzzer.
And when the second half began, COC continued to push its lead. A three by PG Jordan Surratt from the corner got it started after D. Williams had scored for Glendale to cut the lead to 49-41. Then a steal and slam by Spencer made it 54-41, and a Spencer feed to SG Curtis Dunwoody pushed the lead to 15 at 56-41. The lead grew to 20 when Davis made a short jumper. And it grew to 30 at 78-48 when Davis made a three. From then on, it was only a question of how many points COC would score. SF Jeremy Lake made a lay-up after a pass from SG Navid Khajavi to finish the scoring, giving COC an even 100 points on the night.
For COC, Spencer led the way, as usual, finishing with 23 pts and 9 asts. Dunwoody added 22 pts (4 threes) and 7 asts. All five starters, plus backup Ctr Will Broadous, finished in double figures. Davis had 15 pts and a team-best 7 rebs. As a team, COC shot 60% for the game, including 10 threes, and had just 8 turnovers.
It was a crippling loss for Glendale, which is fighting for one of the last playoff berths in the South. D. Williams led the Vaqueros with 13 pts and 10 rebs. SF Mike Newton had 12 pts while Phillips finished with 11. PG D.J. Wyatt had 8 pts and 9 asts.
