PG Leslie Ortiz, who had 23 assists in COC's first game this season against Santa Monica, dished out 25 assists in #9 Canyons' 107-69 romp over the Corsairs Saturday night.
COC jumped out to a 21-2 lead in the first 7 minutes of the game, and cruised from there. The only questions were how many points the Cougars would score and what kind of numbers Ortiz would post.
The 5-4 freshman from Sylmar dished out 13 assists in the first half as COC built a 57-31 lead at the break. And in the second half, she dished out 12 more, and didn't take a single shot. For the night, she finished with 12 points and 6 steals in addition to all the assists.
But she wasn't the only Cougar with big numbers. Ctr Melissa Tachias made 9 of 13 shots to finish with 21 points. SF Janette Galindo, the only sophomore on the team, posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. PF Facion Edwards had 11 points while tying Galindo for team honors with 13 boards. Reserves Enchantee Merriman (18 pts, 6 threes), Kelly O'Linn (11 pts) and Megan Bailey (10 pts ) also reached double figures. SG Hina Kimitete, who ran the point when Ortiz was on the bench, had 5 points, 9 assists and no turnovers.
For Santa Monica, SF Ashley Osborne had a big night with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and PG Quiana Fenty narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. SG Elizabeth Jefferson had 15 points, all in the second half. And Ctr Sharde McDaughtery led all rebounders with 14 boards.
The win gives COC a perfect 10-0 record in WSC-South play. They're 18-9 overall. Santa Monica falls to 11-19 overall and 2-8 in the WSC-South.
Wednesday figures to be a huge night in the COC community. With a win against visiting Bakersfield, not only could the Cougars clinch the WSC-South championship, but the win would be the 500th of Coach Greg Herrick's career. Game time is 5:30 pm
