Chaffey 105, Antelope Valley 96 (women: AVC, 73-71)

SF Deonte Huff scored 41 pts and grabbed 11 rebs, but it wasn’t enough for #12 Antelope Valley (15-9, 4-5) to hold off #9 Chaffey (17-7, 7-2) in a key Foothill Conference matchup Wednesday night in Lancaster. Chaffey had 5 scorers in double figures and forced 29 AVC turnovers to win its fifth straight game.

AVC made its first 6 shots of the game to jump out to a 13-7 lead in the opening minutes, but Chaffey rallied as they forced 5 Marauder turnovers and went ahead, 14-13. Those would continue to be themes all evening as AVC shot 62.5% from the field but committed 29 turnovers.

Chaffey pushed its lead to 6 at 36-30 on a three by PF Victor Michel, but AVC rallied behind Huff's scoring to tie the game at 46 and take a 54-50 halftime lead. Huff made 11 of 13 shots in the first half for 26 points.

But the Chaffey pressure continued to wear down AVC, and while Huff would add 15 second-half points, AVC scored just 42 in the second half. And as the game wore on, AVC fought a battle of attrition as PG Tyronne Miller left the game three different times because of leg cramps, PF Tommy Harris left the game once with a leg cramp and Ctr Brandon Murray left the game twice after aggravating an ankle injury. In addition, backup PG Tyme Hodges picked up 2 personal fouls and a technical in about a 10-second span to foul out with 12:17 remaining.

AVC led 70-60 after baskets by Harris and Murray, and still held a 10-point advantage at 74-64. But then came the Chaffey rally that put the Panthers ahead for good. Hodges' outburst resulted in 4 free throws for Chaffey, and that made it 74-68. A minute later, Chaffey was in the bonus, which helped them pile up points from the free throw line (Chaffey would finish 27-for-35). The Panthers took the lead on a three by Michel with 9-1/2 minutes left, making it 77-76.

AVC hung tough for a while, re-taking the lead on a jumper by Miller, but Chaffey kept making threes. Michel made it 80-78, and after a basket by Huff tied the game at 80, SG Timothy Smith made a three to put Chaffey ahead, 83-80. A putback basket by SG Ronnie Bullock and a basket by PF Sheldon Franklin gave Chaffey a 6-point lead at 87-81. A short time later, a three by SF Vince Alvarado made it 93-84 with 4:18 left. AVC rallied to trail by just 5 at 96-91, but never really threatened again. Finally, Huff scored on a putback basket with just over a minute left, giving him 41 points, an AVC season-high, before he came out of the game.

PG Haron Hargrave led Chaffey with 26 pts, and he also dished out 4 asts and registered 5 steals. Franklin had a huge game off the bench with 18 pts and a team-high 9 boards. Smith had 17 pts (on 7/9 shooting) while Michel added 16 (3 threes).

For AVC, Huff posted career highs in points and rebounds, and they were also game bests. SG Carlton Clay added 19 pts including 3 threes. Harris added 10 pts. And Miller dished out 12 asts.

In the women's game, #2 Antelope Valley (23-2, 9-0) all but wrapped up the Foothill Conference by just barely holding on against #6 Chaffey (18-5, 7-2). C RaChauna Randle scored 21 pts and grabbed 26 rebs to become the first AVC player ever to post a 20-20 game in the victory.

It was a tough, playoff-type game all the way, and the teams combined for 62 turnovers. But most of the turnovers were due to defensive intensity, and there were also 48 fouls called.

Chaffey jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first few minutes, holding a 31-20 edge before AVC rallied. But the Marauders put together a 13-1 run to take a 1-point lead after a pair of free throws by Randle. The lead went back and forth the rest of the half, and AVC held a 1-point edge at 37-36 at intermission.

In the second half, AVC held a narrow lead much of the time, but could never quite put away a determined Chaffey squad. Finally, a three by SG Shanae Blake tied the game at 67. But then SF Sheena Crenshaw scored a FG+FT 3-point play to put AVC back ahead, 70-67. AVC nearly extended its lead moments later, but PF Mariqueta Starling was called for a charging foul, wiping out an apparent basket. The AVC coaches were so upset, they stomped the floor hard and loud enough to draw a technical foul. Starling fouled out on the play, and Blake made both technical FTs to make it 70-69 AVC.

A steal by Crenshaw got the ball back for AVC, and she passed to Randle, who was fouled but made both free throws to make it 72-69. But Chaffey rallied again to cut the margin to a single point on a pair of FTs by Blake with 58.8 seconds left. Then Randle stepped on the center court line for an over-and-back violation on AVC's next possession, giving Chaffey 32.1 seconds to win the game.

But Blake's shot missed, and Randle got the rebound. She was fouled immediately, but made just 1 of 2 FTs, making it 73-71 with 23.4 seconds left. This time PF Unique Bennett tried a shot, but it also missed and Randle again got the rebound. She got the ball to PG Shalonie Hutchinson, but Hutchinson's pass ahead went out of bounds. Chaffey got the ball back, 90 feet from the basket, with just 2.3 seconds left.

And then Chaffey got the break that almost got them a tie. On the inbounds play, Blake and Randle both went for the ball. But Blake got there first, and when Randle ran into her, she was called for the foul. That gave Blake 2 FTs with 1.2 seconds left, and if she made both, the game would be tied.

But she missed the first free throw. Then she missed the second one, on purpose, but Randle got the rebound (her 26th) as time ran out, giving AVC the win.

In addition to Randle, the only other double-figure scorer for AVC was Crenshaw, who had 10 pts. Nobody else had more than 4 rebs. But Randle had 21 pts, 26 boards as well as a game-high 5 asts. For the game, AVC outrebounded Chaffey, 53-42.

For Chaffey, whose only 2 conference losses are both to AVC, Blake led the way with a game-high 22 pts. Ctr Danielle Mason added 12 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.
