PF Thurman Woods and SF Wendell Wright each had 17 pts as Santa Ana (3-5) pulled away in the second half to upset #13 Glendale (5-3), 84-69, in the final game of the first day of the Roadrunner Round-Up at Rio Hondo College in Whittier.
Wright scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and also had 13 rebs and 5 asts as the Dons broke open a close game. The teams were tied, 34-all, at halftime.
Santa Ana began the game with a 7-0 spurt, with 6 points coming from Woods, and led 11-2 in the early going. The Dons had a 33-23 lead late in the first half before Glendale ended the half on an 11-1 run, tying the score on a free throw by PG Jose Garcia with 32.5 seconds left following a steal.
Woods started the second half strong, hitting a 3-pointer and then stealing a pass and getting the ball to SG Isiah Emaguna for a lay-up to make it 41-36. Then, after a Woods rebound, Emaguna hit a 3-pointer to make it 44-36.
As the second half progressed, Santa Ana extended the lead. A 3-pointer by SG Yama Kader made it 51-42. A dunk by Wright after a steal by PG Steve Coulter made it 53-42. A basket by Ctr Mack Thomas made it 62-50, and then a skywalking jam by Wright made it 64-50 with 9:19 left.
Glendale made a late rally, cuttting the margin to 7 at 74-67 after a 3-pointer by SG Deonte Wyatt with 2:25 left, and to 6 at 75-69 after a dunk by PF Narbeh Ebrahimian with 1:30 left. But Santa Ana scored the final 9 points of the game to pull away for the 15-point win.
Wright finished with totals of 17 pts, 13 rebs, 5 asts, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Woods added 17 pts, 8 rebs, 2 asts, 2 blks and 2 steals. Emaguna had 17 pts, 7 rebs and 6 asts, and Coulter had 12 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts and 3 steals. Kader had 9 pts and Thomas had 8 pts off the bench.
For Glendale, Wyatt led the way with a game-high 18 pts, including 4 threes. SG Daniel Palmer also had 4 threes, finishing with 15 pts. Garcia had 9 pts and a game-high 11 asts.
