Five players scored in double figures for #10-North Chabot, which led virtually the entire game while racing to a 95-75 first-round win over Shasta at the 76th Annual Modesto JC tournament Wednesday afternoon.
Chabot (7-1) broke a 6-6 tie with a 12-3 spurt, saw Shasta (1-7) briefly close the gap to 4 points at 21-17, and then raced away for good. A putback basket by Ctr Andrew Rice made it 27-17 midway through the first half. A 3-pointer by SG Greg Brown made it 33-22. SF Paris Davis scored off a pass from PG Leo Smith after a steal by PG Kahlil James to make it 42-28 late in the first half.
Chabot led, 45-35, at the half, but quickly increased the lead when the second half began. PF Jamese Potts hit a 3-pointer in the opening seconds to make it 48-35. Brown scored on a steal & lay-up to make it 50-35 less than a minute into the second half. Ctr Adrian Crump converted a lob pass from Smith for an alley-oop jam to make it 59-41 with about 15 minutes to go. Davis scored on a putback after a steal by Brown to make it 61-41.
A little later, Crump threw down the dunk of the day, a powerful left-handed slam off a pass from Smith with 10:24 left that made it 75-49. And he converted the jam despite being pushed in the back in mid-air. Though he missed the resulting free throw, after the dunk Chabot's lead never went below 15 points the rest of the way.
Davis came off the bench to lead the Gladiators in scoring with 16 pts on 7-for-9 from the floor. Brown had 15 pts plus 5 asts and a game-high 5 steals. Rice had 12 pts and a team-high 6 rebs. Smith had 11 pts, 4 asts and 3 steals, and SF Jalen Rodgers had 10 pts. James had 9 pts and a game-high 6 asts.
And Chabot won despite the absence of Ray Baldwin, who leads the Gladiators in scoring at 11.3 pts per game, as well as PF Matt Simpkins. Once upon a time Simpkins was one of the top recruits on the West Coast, and he played a season at the University of Memphis alongside Tyreke Evans for coach John Calipari. Unfortunately he left Memphis the same year they did, 2009, and has been out of organized basketball since then. He has played in 5 games so far this season, coming off the bench and averaging 7.6 pts and 5.2 rebs per game, but was not with the team in Modesto and according to coach Denny Aye his status with the team is unclear now.
For Shasta, SG Andrew Fitzhugh scored a game-high 24 pts, including 6 three-pointers, and added 6 rebs, 2 asts and 4 steals. PF Ethan Templeton had 13 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Ctr Derrick Barrie and SF Gavin Graham each scored 11 pts.
