LA Pierce 62, Barstow 59

SF Malcolm Collins had 15 pts, 12 in the second half, as LA Pierce (5-8) edged Barstow (7-4), 62-59, in the Citrus College Holiday Classic Wednesday evening in Glendora.

Pierce saw a 12-point second-half lead disappear, but the Brahmas went right back in front and held off another late charge to get the win. Barstow had one last chance to tie it in the final seconds, but SF Martez Walker's final shot missed everything as the final buzzer sounded.

Barstow began the game on a 5-0 spurt and led 9-2 in the early going. But Pierce rallied to tie it 12-12, and took a 16-14 lead on a pair of free throws by Collins with 9:08 left in the first half. The Pierce lead reached 6 points at 23-17 before Barstow rallied to tie it at 24 on a 3-pointer by SG Galander Abdelrahman with about four minutes left in the half.

That would be Barstow's final scoring of the half, however, and Pierce took a 28-24 lead at the break on a basket by Ctr Michael Aguilar sandwiched by single free throws by Collins and Ctr Arash Riahi.

Pierce began the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 38-26 lead. Barstow answered with a 15-3 run to tie the score at 43 with 7:54 left. But Pierce went back in front on a 3-pointer by Collins and a single free throw by SG Jeremy White that made it 47-43, and pushed the lead to 6 points at 54-48 on another Collins 3-pointer with just under 5 minutes remaining.

Barstow got within two points at 55-53 and trailed, 57-55, with 32 seconds left. SF Bertrand Kamga made one of two free throws for Pierce with 27 seconds left to make it 58-55. Walker answered with a driving lay-up for Barstow with 17 seconds left to make it 58-57. A pair of free throws by Pierce PG Ever Lopez made it 60-57 with 14 seconds to go.

Then Pierce fouled Walker before he could try a 3-pointer, and Walker made two free throws with 6 seconds left to make it 60-59. Barstow then fouled Lopez before ball was in bounded, and Lopez made two more free throws to make it 62-59. Then Barstow got the ball to Walker, but his off-balance, contested 3-pointer at the buzzer was not close.

Collins had 15 pts and 9 rebs to lead the Brahmas. He was the only player to score in double figures, but Kamga had 9 pts, Lopez had 8 pts plus 7 rebs and 4 asts, and Aguilar also had 8 pts. SF Daniel St. Hubert had 4 pts plus 7 rebs and 7 asts.

For Barstow, Ctr Daquan Brown led the way with 17 pts and 7 rebs, and Walker managed 11 pts after missing his first 7 shots of the game. PF Ray Mitchell had 9 pts and 6 rebs.
