Riverside got 17 points from PG Tyresha Calhoun and a strong all around game from SF Shavonne Smith, and the defense held Ventura to 30% shooting as the #3-ranked Tigers (14-5) subdued the host #8 Pirates (11-8), 62-48, Friday evening in Ventura.
Riverside held a narrow lead for much of the first half, and a 15-foot jumper by SG Debbie Barragan just before the buzzer gave the Tigers a 29-25 lead at the break.
But the second half belonged to Riverside. The Tiger defense forced 11 Ventura turnovers in the first 7 minutes (and 36 turnovers for the game) as Riverside expanded its lead.
A jumper by Smith to start the second half made it 31-25, and the lead grew to 8 after a basket by Taneika Calhoun made it 38-30. And after a three by Ventura's Sandy Perry, the Tigers scored the next 9 points to push the lead to 49-33 and take control of the game.
For Riverside, Tyresha Calhoun made 6 of 8 shot attempts, including a pair of threes for her 17 pts. And Smith added 15 pts, 8 rebs, 8 asts and 4 steals to her 15 pts. PF Taneika Calhoun came off the bench and grabbed a game-high 11 rebs. Ctr LaToya Riggins had 11 pts.
For Ventura, SF Kristen Gibbert led the way with 10 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts. SG Misty Alvarado also had 10 pts and 6 rebs for the Pirates.
