Sierra 64, Chabot 54

Isaiah Pinero had 21 pts and 16 rebs to lead Sierra past host Chabot in a semifinal of the 2014 Chabot Holiday Classic in Hayward.

Sierra (7-6) trailed 45-37 midway through the second half before going on a stunning 23-4 run, taking a 60-49 lead with 1:30 left and stunning the 11th-ranked Gladiators in their own building.

Pineiro gave Sierra its first lead of the second half when he scored off a pass from Devin Moss with 7:40 left to give the Wolverines a 48-47 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Anthony Williams and Moss pushed the Sierra advantage to nine points at 56-47 with 5:05 remaining. After Terrence Simon scored for Chabot, Cole Preston made a pair of free throws and Antonio Lewis scored on a tip-in for Sierra to push the lead to 60-49 and all but clinch the win for Sierra.

Chabot cut the margin to seven points when Noel Briones was fouled attempting a 3-point shot and made two of the three resulting free throws with 58.3 seconds left. But Pineiro made a pair of free throws for Sierra with 52.5 seconds left, and threw down a slam dunk off an alley-oop pass from Devin Campbell to make it 64-54 and clinch the win for the Wolverines.

Before the 23-4 run, it looked like Chabot (9-7) had shaken off a slow start and was ready to advance to the championship game of its tournament. Sierra scored the first four points of the game and led, 8-2, early on. But Chabot tied the score at 14 on a 3-pointer by Khalil James and took a lead moments later on a long 2-point jumper by Shanquel Watson.

Chabot pushed its lead to nine points when Kellen Sweetwynne scored off a pass from Simon, was fouled, and made the free throw to make it 28-19 with four minutes left in the first half. Sierra got within two points at 28-26, but Sweetwynne hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to give Chabot a 31-26 advantage at the break.

Sierra got within two points early in the second half, but Chabot pushed its lead to eight points at 45-37 after a basket by Chris Patterson off a pass from Watson. But then came the 23-4 run as Sierra pulled away for the win.

Pineiro was 7-for-9 from the floor and 7-for-11 from the line for his game-high 21 pts, and he added a game-high 16 rebs, 4 asts, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Williams had 15 pts, including 3 three-pointers, on 6-for-9 from the floor. Lewis came off the bench for a double-double with 10 pts and 14 rebs. Preston had 7 pts and dished out a game-high 9 asts.

For Chabot, Sweetwynne had a team-best 14 pts and tied for team honors with 6 rebs. But he was the only Gladiator to score in double digits. Raymond Baldwin had 9 pts, 6 rebs and 3 asts, and Decarlos Frank had 8 pts and a team-high 5 asts. Amazingly, the Gladiators shot just 29.7% from the floor in their own gym and that, combined with Sierra's 45-38 rebounding advantage, spelled doom for the home team.
