Barstow 93, LA Trade Tech 87

Daylin Billingsley was one of five players scored in double digits for Barstow as the Vikings posted their second win of the season with a 93-87 decision over LA Trade Tech in the consolation game of the 25th Annual Cougar Holiday Classic Sunday in Santa Clarita.

Barstow (2-12) led most of the way, but saw a 14-point first-half lead disappear midway through the second half. Trade Tech (3-11) took a 69-65 lead with about 9 minutes to go, but Barstow surged back in front in the final three-plus minutes to come away with the win.

Barstow held a slim 85-83 lead with 1:48 to go, but Tyler Poullard assisted on baskets by John Howard and Cedric Young to give the Vikings a 6-point lead, their biggest lead of the second half, at 89-83 with 1:10 left. Trade Tech got within four points a couple times after that, but Billingsley and Poullard each made a free throw in the final 18.6 seconds to help seal the win.

Barstow jumped out to an early 13-7 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers by Ramino Martinez, and pushed its lead to double digits when Billingsley made a 3-pointer with about 7 minutes left in the first half that made it 35-24. Poullard pushed the lead to 14 points with two free throws with 4:16 left that gave Barstow a 41-27 advantage.

Trade Tech cut the deficit to six points at 45-39 late in the first half, and trailed by 8 at 49-41 at the break. Then early in the second half, the Beavers cut the margin to two points as Barstow missed its first 7 shots of the half, and eventually tied the score at 51.

Trade Tech took a 61-57 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Arta Turner, but Barstow quickly tied the score at 63 and the lead changed hands several times over the next few minutes. Barstow took an 80-75 lead after a 3-pointer by Justin McCullough, but Trade Tech was still within two points at 85-83 with 1:48 to play.

Billingsley earned all-tournament honors, scoring 16 pts and adding a team-high 9 rebs plus 5 asts, 3 blocks and a steal. McCullough came off the bench for 16 pts. Poullard had 13 pts and a game-high 6 asts. Young scored 11 pts on 5-for-6 shooting, and Martinez had 10 pts and 7 rebs. Overall the Vikings shot an impressive 54% from the floor.

For Trade Tech, Jerodd Blount scored a game-high 28 pts and added 10 rebs for the double-double. Antonio Singleton earned all-tournament honors with 11 pts and a game-high 16 rebs, and for a best-of-the-day dunk in the first half when he threw down a powerful jam on a break as Poullard tried in vain to stand in for the charge. He also had 4 asts, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Turner came off the bench for 16 pts, including 4 threes, and Rashaad Williams had 10 pts.
