Cerritos 92, Lassen 82 (OT)

SF Aaron Thompson had a magnificent game with 38 pts, 11 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals but Cerritos (8-7) still needed overtime to get past Lassen (8-10), 92-82, in a consolation game in the SJCC Holiday tournament at Evergreen Valley College.

Thompson, who is headed to Cal State Fullerton next season, made 17 of 23 shots from the floor for the Falcons. And he had some help from Ctr Trevele Jones, who went 11 of 15 from the floor for 25 pts.

But thanks to strong games from SF Jordan Stokes and SG Patrick Carlson, Lassen not only stayed close but forced the game to overtime.

Lassen actually started strong, leading 10-5 before Thompson first entered the game. And as soon as Thompson came onto the floor, the Falcons went on a 10-2 run, taking a 15-12 lead on a three by Thompson.

As the first half wound down, Lassen went back into the lead, taking an 8-point lead at 41-33 after a 4-point play by Patrick Carlson. Cerritos closed the margin to 6 points at the half to trail, 43-37.

Throughout the second half, the lead went back and forth and neither team led by more than two points in the last few minutes. Thompson gave Cerritos a 77-75 lead on a basket with 41 seconds left, but Stokes answered for Lassen, tying the game on a driving lay-up with 21 seconds left and sending it to overtime.

In overtime, however, Cerritos outscored the Cougars, 15-5, quickly taking control of the game on a pair of baskets by Thompson. Then a 3-pointer by PG Wayne Chapman made it 84-79, and a basket by T. Jones made it 86-79. A free throw by Chapman, followed by a pair of free throws by PG Aaron King on a technical foul against Lassen coach Ben Riley pushed the lead to 10 at 89-79 and clinched the win for Cerritos.

Thompson and T. Jones combined to go 28 for 38 from the floor for 63 points. King also had a solid game with 12 pts and 4 asts. Chapman chipped in with 6 pts, 4 steals and a team-high 6 asts.

For Lassen, Stokes led the way with 26 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals. P. Carlson had 24 pts - 5 threes - plus 7 rebs and 4 asts. PF Chris Carlson added 10 pts and PG Brandon Thompson dished out a game-high 8 asts.
