San Bernardino Valley 67, LA Pierce 44

SG Lance Hurdle had 16 pts and Ctr Johnny Barnes had a double-double as #9 San Bernardino Valley (12-4) walloped #14 LA Pierce (9-6), 67-44, in a game that was ended early after a bench-clearing incident midway through the second half in the first round of the Cougar Holiday Classic.

SBVC was in control virtually the whole way, holding a 28-point lead at halftime and leading by 30 early in the second half. After Pierce overcame an early 7-0 SBVC by going on a 10-0 run, SBVC went on a 29-6 run to go ahead, 36-16, and take control of the game. And the Wolverines were ahead by 23 with 8:35 left in the second half when the game was halted.

Pierce PG Ever Lopez grabbed a rebound, but was tied up by SBVC PF Darrian Walton moments later. The call was a held ball, and Lopez went to the ground. When he got up, he confronted Walton, and shoving ensued. Then SF Lewis Leonard of SBVC and SG Jamelle Tolliver of Pierce, among others, entered the fray. Within seconds both benches had emptied onto the floor, though the coaches and officials separated the players before any further mischief occurred. Still, because of the clearing of the benches, the officials ended the game with 8:35 left and awarded SBVC the win.

Hurdle made 6 of 7 shots from the floor and led all scorers. Barnes had 11 pts and 11 rebs. PG Darrian McKinstry had 7 pts and 7 asts for the Wolverines.

For Pierce, Lopez had 10 pts, 5 asts and 4 steals. PF Donald Lee also had 10 pts for the Brahmas. Ctr Steven Shewmake had 6 pts and a team-high 10 rebs. Oddly, in the game Pierce neither made a 3-point shot nor even attempted a free throw.
