Moorpark 98, Big Bend (WA) 93

In the most entertaining game of the day, two very similar teams combined for 191 points as Moorpark (7-7) topped Big Bend of Washington, 98-93 Wedneday afternoon in the first round of the Cougar Holiday Classic in Valencia.

SF Greg Murray and PF Brandon Dempster each had 27 pts, including 4 threes, to lead the Raiders. Their big performances were able to just slightly overcome the effort by Big Bend SG Blake Solomon, who had 34 pts and 5 asts for the Vikings.

Big Bend jumped out to an early lead, going ahead, 16-8, before a Moorpark run got the Raiders the lead at 19-18 after a three by Murray. And then the Raiders continued to roll, going ahead by as many as 13 at 43-30 before settling for an 11-point lead at halftime, 49-38.

In the second half, Big Bend quickly cut the Moorpark lead down to size, reducing the margin to 3 at 61-58. But the Vikings were never quite able to get even. A three by PG Daley Landon brought the Vikings to within a point at 80-79, only to see a three by Murray give Moorpark some breathing room again. And the Vikings still trailed by just 2 points at 90-88 with just over a minute left before Murray drained another three and then sank a pair of free throws to push Moorpark’s margin back to 7 points and clinch the win.
