Long Beach 89, Antelope Valley 76

SG Deon Tresvant scored 30 pts, including 5 threes, to lead visiting Long Beach City (8-10) to an upset win over #3 Antelope Valley (13-3) Thursday night at Marauder Gym in Lancaster.

Long Beach played near-flawless basketball in building a 21-point lead midway through the second half, and then held off a late AVC charge that saw the lead narrow to 9 points with just under 2 minutes remaining.

LBCC shot 50% from the floor with just 3 turnovers in the first half, and as the Vikings extended the lead to 21 at 68-47, they still had just the 3 turnovers. The Vikings and the Marauders each finished with just 9 turnovers on the night, a remarkably low number given the pace of the game (the teams combined for 166 shot attempts).

The game was evenly played early on, with neither team leading by more than 4 points until Tresvant's first three of the night put LBCC ahead, 21-16. But from there, the Vikings pulled away, increasing the margin to 8 at 30-22 after another Tresvant three and to 10 at 32-22 after a baseline drive and basket by Ctr Chris Brown. A pair of free throws by PF Eric Williams, who had a double-double in the game, later pushed the margin to 12 and a lay-up by SF Randolph White gave LBCC a 14-point lead at 44-30. AVC SG Reggie Arnold scored to cut the margin to 12 at 44-32, but SF Matt Richard scored on a putback basket in the final seconds before halftime to make it 46-32 Vikings at the break.

In the second half, AVC got a FG+FT 3-point play from Arnold to start things off, but then Long Beach got a three from Tresvant and pulled away. Baskets from Brown and Williams pushed the margin to 17 at 54-37.

LBCC got a scare when Richard picked up his 4th foul with 11:58 left and the Vikings leading by 14 at 61-47, but then Long Beach scored the next 7 points on baskets by Brown and Williams and a three by Tresvant to push the margin to 21 at 68-47.

AVC rallied late to cut into the lead, but never really got close enough to threaten. SF Ade Dagunduro scored on a lay-up and drew Richard's 5th foul with 3:51 left; that made it a 13-point game at 77-64. With 2:06 left, Ctr Marcellus Robertson's free throw made it 78-67. He missed the second free throw, but after he and Arnold each had 3 chances at the putback, he returned to the line after another foul and made both free throws to make it 78-69 with 1:55 remaining.

But that's as close as AVC would get. A pair of free throws by Tresvant pushed the lead back into double digits at 80-69. Dagunduro scored for AVC to again make it a 9-point game, but then Brown scored on a feed from Williams to push the margin back to 11. And in the final minute, Williams and Brown each made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 15 and remove any remaining doubt as to the outcome.

For LBCC, Tresvant led the way but all five starters had strong games. Williams had a double-double with 20 pts and 14 rebs. So did Richard, who had 10 pts, 11 rebs and 5 asts. Brown added 16 pts. And Green had 7 pts, 11 rebs and 8 asts.

For AVC, Robertson was a force inside with 20 pts and 24 rebs. Dagunduro, plagued by foul trouble in the second half, managed 14 pts and 8 rebs. Arnold had 14 pts plus 7 rebs and 5 asts. PF JaVaughn Espritt added 11 pts. And though he didn't score, the game marked the season debut of highly-regarded Ctr Chawn Johnson, A D-1 bounceback who is recovering from knee surgery.
