Glendale 85, East LA 69

Ctr Jamar Eubanks had 20 pts and 8 rebs to lead #15 Glendale (10-5) to an 85-69 win over visiting East LA (2-8) Wednesday night at Vaquero Gym in a non-conference game.

Eubanks was one of four Vaqueros to score in double figures, and scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half as Glendale cruised through the half with a double-digit lead.

The game was evenly played early on, with Glendale taking a 5-point lead at 10-5 3:49 into the game on a free throw by SG Gerrell Finney that came on East LA's 6th foul of the game. But the Huskies rallied to tie the game and despite being in the penalty for so long only trailed by 2 points at 29-27 late in the half.

But then came a decisive 13-0 run that put the Vaqueros in control. A three by PG Robert Valentine got things started, making it 32-27. Then a pair of free throws by SF Antony Phillips made it 34-27. Then Eubanks grabbed a rebound, scored on the putback, drew a foul and made the free throw to make it 37-27. A three by Finney extended the margin to 13 at 40-27, and a basket by Finney on a feed from PF Tyler Rose capped the run and made it 42-27.

A late three by PF Benjamin Clyde just before halftime brought the Huskies to within 12 at intermission, but early in the second half Glendale pulled away again, thanks largely to Phillips. A FG+FT 3-point play by Rose after a feed from Phillips made it 45-30, and a pair of free throws by Eubanks after a Phillips steal made it 47-30.

The Glendale lead reached as many as 22 points in the second half after a three by Valentine made it 59-37 with just over 14 minutes left, and the Vaqueros were never challenged after that.

For Glendale, top scorers in addition to Eubanks included Finney, who had 15 pts, and Valentine, who had 12 pts on 4 threes. PG Brandon Robnett had 12 pts on 4-of-4 FGs plus 3 asts and 2 steals and Phillips finished with 8 pts, 7 asts and 6 rebs. As a team, Glendale shot 52% from the floor for the game.

For East LA, Ctr Richard Westphain had 13 pts and 7 rebs and SG Daniel Vasquez had 13 pts on 3 threes. PG DeAdrian Williams had 11 pts, 5 asts and 5 steals. All of those performances came from players off the bench, however, and of the East LA starters only PG Cesar Gerardo reached double figures (10 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts). Overall, the Huskies' reserves outscored their starters, 47-22.
