SG Garrett Larch-Miller scored 17 pts and Ctr Bilal Rahim came off the bench for a double-double as Cuyamaca outdistanced Moorpark, 65-51, Wednesday evening in the first round of the 17th Annual Vaquero Classic at Glendale College.
Cuyamaca (5-4) led virtually all the way, but it was potentially a very costly victory for the Coyotes as PF Shane Dillon left the game with an apparent right knee injury after landing awkwardly following an attempted lay-up with 3:08 left in the first half.
Nonetheless, Cuyamaca continued to lead, extending a 29-21 halftime advantage into double digits early in the second half and leading easily the rest of the way. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Larch-Miller pushed the lead to 43-26 midway through the second half.
Moorpark (2-7) rallied to cut the deficit to single digits at 51-42 with just under six minutes to go. But Larch-Miller answered with a 2-point jumper and a 3-point field goal to push the Cuyamaca lead back to 14 points at 56-42 less than a minute later, and the Coyotes led by double figures the remainder of the game.
Moorpark led only briefly, at 4-3 early on, after a pair of driving lay-ups by PG Shayan Baloor. But then Cuyamaca went on a 7-0 spurt to take a 10-4 lead. A 3-pointer by Dillon and a driving lay-up by PG Terrence Cole made it 25-15 in favor of the Coyotes.
But moments later, Dillon went up for a lay-up on the western goal, made contact with a Moorpark defender in mid-air and landed awkwardly behind the basket. After a short delay, he was helped from the floor, not to return, and did not appear to put any weight on his right knee. Dillon entered the game averaging 10.9 pts per game, second on Cuyamaca, and a team-leading 5.6 rebs per contest.
Larch-Miller led the Coyotes with his 17 pts, which included 4 three-pointers. Cole had 12 pts and 5 asts, and SF Jeff Bartley also had 12 pts. Rahim, who played most of the second half in place of the injured Dillon, finished with 12 pts plus game-highs of 11 rebs and 5 blocked shots.
For Moorpark, SF Shaquille Moore led the Raiders with 17 pts, 9 rebs and 3 steals, though he made just 5 of 20 shot attempts. Baloor had 15 pts and Ctr Austin Howell had 10 pts and 7 rebs. But Moorpark shot just 26% from the floor and, amazingly, managed just 5 assists on 16 made baskets.
