PG Bert Whittington and SF Allen Hester each scored 14 points and the #11 Ohlone Renegades (12-5) made 6 free throws in the final minute to hold off Merced (6-10), 67-59, in the consolation final of the Delta Holiday Tournament.
Merced began the game on a 6-0 run and pushed its lead to 14-5 in the opening minutes, but after that the game was close all the way. Merced held a 2-point lead at the half and pushed its lead to 7 at 36-29 early in the second half, but Ohlone rallied to take its first lead at 37-36 on a basket by SG Nate Carroll a few minutes later. The Renegades continued to nurse a short lead until pushing their margin to 5 at 61-56 on a three by SG Sam Kim. But the Blue Devils answered that with a three from A Daeron Duncan to make it a 2-point game again at 61-59.
As the time wound down, Ohlone had the ball and Merced elected to foul Kim. That strategy backfired, however, when Kim made 2 free throws to make it a 2-score game at 63-59. After a Merced turnover, Ohlone got the ball back and this time the Blue Devils fouled SG Alex Arias. Again, the strategy backfired for Merced when Arias made both free throws to make it 65-59. After a missed shot, Ohlone got the rebound and the Blue Devils were once again forced to foul Kim, who once again made a pair of free throws to make it 67-59 and seal the win.
Duncan led Merced with a double-double, totalling 12 pts and 11 rebs. PF Ricardo Jenkins had a strong game as well with 10 pts and 7 boards. SG Chris Hayes had 9 pts and 5 steals. And Ctr Leslie Malone had 7 pts, 9 rebs and 7 blocked shots.
