San Francisco 77, Delta 61

Third-ranked San Francisco (12-2) made a strong statement Sunday, beating second-ranked Delta (15-2), 77-61, on its home floor to capture the 41st annual Delta Holiday Tournament in Stockton.

PF Brandon Wiley posted a double-double with 18 pts and 11 rebs to lead the Rams, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. And four other CCSF players scored in double figures.

Delta began the game with a small lineup, starting what were basically four guards and a forward and leaving 6-10 Ctr Mike Edwards on the bench. And that strategy seemed to work early on as the Mustangs raced out to a 13-2 lead.

But from that point on, it was all City College. The Rams went on a 20-8 spurt to take a 22-21 lead on a pair of free throws by Wiley with 6:05 left in the half. The lead went to 3 points on a spinning drive by SG Robert Owens that made it 28-25, and to 4 points on a 3-pointer by PG Roburt Sallie that made it 32-28. A putback basket by Wiley made it 34-28, and a three by Owens pushed the margin to 9 at 37-28 late in the first half.

Delta got a pair of free throws from Ctr Aaron Wilson at the end of the first half to make it 37-30 at the break, but as soon as the second half started, CCSF pushed the lead into double digits. A three by Wiley made it 40-30, a free throw by SF Justin Brownlee made it 41-30 and a driving lay-up by Owens made it 43-30. The lead remained in double digits the rest of the way, reaching a high of 22 after 3 FTs by Ctr Milos Nikolvic that made it 58-36 midway through the second half.

For CCSF, the steady Sallie had 15 pts, and the spectacular Owens had a huge game with 13 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts, 3 blocks and 4 steals, and both were named to the all-tournament team. Brownlee added 11 pts, 5 rebs, 2 blocks and 3 steals. And SG Brandon Martin came off the bench to chip in with 10 pts.

For Delta, SG Roman Van Allen led the way with 10 pts, 4 asts and 4 steals. No other Mustang reached double figures. PG Lavar Neufville, who joined Van Allen on the all-tournament team, had 8 pts and 6 asts. Edwards came off the bench and had 9 pts, 7 rebs and 3 blocked shots.
