SG Lance Hurdle scored 22 pts and three other players scored in double figures for #7 San Bernardino Valley (11-2) in an 87-77 win over Fullerton (6-8) in the consolation championship of the Crown City Holiday Classic at Pasadena City College Saturday afternoon.
Ctr Johnny Barnes had 18 pts and 9 rebs, PF Darrius Walton had a double-double with 16 pts and 11 rebs, and SG Lewis Leonard had 14 pts off the bench for the Wolverines.
It was an evenly-played game, with neither team leading by more than 5 points until well into the second half. SBVC led by 5 at 26-21 and 38-33 in the first half, but Fullerton rallied each time and the game was tied at halftime, 44-44.
In the second half, Fullerton took a 48-46 lead early on after a bank shot by SF Amir Nelson, but SBVC went back in front moments later and never trailed again. Hurdle scored on a feed from PG Darrian McKinstry to push the lead to 6 at 62-56 with just over 12 minutes left, and McKinstry fed Barnes for a basket about two minutes later to push the margin to 7 at 68-61.
Fullerton rallied to get within 2 points at 75-73, but SBVC scored the next 7 points to take control of the game late. Hurdle made the last two of a perfect ten-for-ten day at the free throw line to end that run, and he threw down a dunk in the final minute to punctuate the win. That dunk came on another assist by McKinstry, who finished with 8 pts, 7 asts and 5 steals.
For Fullerton, PF Ray Magee led the way with 25 pts, 11 rebs, 3 asts, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Ctr Bryan LeDuc added 19 pts while SG Calise Patterson added 14. Nelson finished with 10 before fouling out with 4:51 left. The Hornets were without standout forward Rodrick Johnson, the lone holdover from last year's undefeated state champions, who missed the game with a finger injury.
