#1-ranked College of the Siskiyous (13-1) got back on the winning track Friday afternoon, using their superior depth to claim a 78-63 victory over host Cabrillo (5-8) in Aptos.
Seven different Eagles scored at least 8 points in the win, with three of them tying for team honors with 12 points each. That depth helped the Eagles wear down the Seahawks in the final minutes, breaking open what had been a close game in the final two minutes.
Early on, it was Cabrillo that had the better of the play, beginning the game on a 9-0 run and taking an 18-8 lead. But Siskiyous rallied after the rough start (0-7, 5 turnovers before they scored a basket), taking a 24-23 lead after a steal and basket by SG Henrik Foster. The rest of the half was evenly played and the teams were tied at 36 at halftime.
In the second half, Cabrillo took a 38-36 lead on a nice post move by Ctr Igor Fishbeyn, but then the Siskiyous grabbed the lead for good. A basket by SG Terrell Burgess tied the game at 38, and a steal and basket by Burgess put the Eagles ahead, 40-38.
Though the Eagles led the rest of the way, the margin was single digits until the last 2 minutes and they led by just 6 with under 3 minutes to play. But then a steal by Burgess led to a basket by PF Chris Rodriguez, making it 66-58 with 2:19 left. Then a pair of free throws by PF DeMario Ballard extended the lead to 10 at 68-58 with 1:48 to play. Despite a lot of fouling, Cabrillo was unable to significantly cut into the lead down the stretch.
For Siskiyous, which rebounded after losing to #12 Yuba earlier in the week, Rodriguez, Ballard and Foster each scored 12 pts. PG Mark Burns added 11 plus 4 asts while Burgess had 9 pts and 6 rebs; they each had 3 steals as well. SF Danny Tayler and SG Ryan Beesley each added 8 pts including 2 threes apiece. Ballard led the Eagles with 8 rebs.
For Cabrillo, SG Jon Fontenberry led all scorers with 15 pts, including 4 threes. PG Jeff Scott and SF Aaron Patterson each had 12 pts; Patterson led the Seahawks with 8 boards. But the Seahawk bench contributed just 8 points, a far cry from the Siskiyous bench total of 46.
