West LA 68, Desert 62

West LA (7-7) had four players score in double figures in a 68-62 win over College of the Desert (4-7) in a first-round game at the Roy Gilmore Invitational tournament at Ventura College Friday evening.

PG Josh Gordon and Ctr Sudan Daniels each had 13 pts to lead the Oilers. SF Chris Walton came off the bench to add 11 pts, all in the second half, plus 6 rebs and 4 asts. PG Dhafir Washington came off the bench to chip in with 10 pts. And PF Darryl Taylor had a huge game with 9 pts and 16 rebs.

It was a closely-contested game with neither team ever leading by more than 8 points. West LA jumped out to a 10-4 advantage in the early going, only to see COD take a 13-12 lead on a putback basket by PF Kyle Adams and push to a 21-15 advantage after a three by Ctr Josh Garcia. But West scored the game’s next 8 points, going back in front, 23-21, on a basket by SG Jesrael Bluntt. Desert then surged back in front, 28-24, only to see West rally again and tie the game at 28 at halftime.

The see-saw battle continued early in the second half, with COD taking a 35-30 lead early on only to see West rally to go ahead, 38-37, with just over 14 minutes left. Then COD scored the game’s next 7 points to take its biggest lead of the game at 44-38 after a three by SG Johnny Huerta. But West rallied again, going ahead, 48-46, on a three by Washington with 9:21 left.

From there, West pushed its lead to as many as 8 points at 54-46 after a driving lay-up by Walton. Desert cut the margin to 3 points at 58-55 after another three by Huerta, and to a single point at 58-57 moments later, but the Roadrunners were never quite able to get even. A free throw and a putback basket by Daniels with just under 2 minutes left pushed the Oiler lead back to 4 points at 61-57, and a free throw by Walton with 50.7 seconds left increased the lead to 5 at 62-57. COD was never able to threaten after that.

For Desert, PG Nathan Walchuk led the way with 11 pts and 6 asts, but he was the only Roadrunner to score in double figures. Garcia had a huge game off the bench with 9 pts and 16 rebs. Huerta, SF Justin Sobcyzk and Ctr Leonardo Tolin each had 8 pts.
