Imperial Valley 68, Mt. San Jacinto 63

PF Pete Johnson had 22 pts and 7 rebs off the bench to help #13 Imperial Valley (7-3) to a 68-63 win over Mt. San Jacinto (6-7) in a first-round game at the Roy Gilmore Invitational tourney at Ventura Friday afternoon.

Mt. San Jacinto led the entire first half, opening a 9-point lead at 30-21 after a basket from Ctr Dane Johnson in the last minute before intermission. But Imperial Valley finished the first half on a 5-0 run and scored the first 7 points of the second half as well, going ahead, 33-30 after a pair of baskets by SF Deveon Jenkins and a free throw by Ctr Ben Thompson. The lead reached as many as 7 point at 41-34 after a jumper by P. Johnson.

Mt. San Jacinto rallied to close within a point until a monster jam by Thompson restored order with just under 2 minutes left. A jumper by PG Dean Curry pushed the lead to 5 points at 66-61, and a big defensive block and rebound by Jenkins on a drive by Mt. San Jacinto PF Dejuan Flowers in the final minute helped clinch the win.

For IVC, P. Johnson led the way in scoring and rebounds, while SG James Hughes had 10 pts. The IVC reserves scored 40 of the Arabs’ 68 points. SG Brit Kelly was the lone starter in double figures with 11 pts. Jenkins, however, had a strong all-around game with 6 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts and the key block. And the entire IVC team shot well, clicking at 54% from the floor for the game.

For Mt. San Jacinto, Johnson had team-highs of 15 pts and 7 rebs while PF Lee Stephens added 14 pts and 5 rebs. SG Lorenzo Keeler had a rough game shooting, finishing 1-for-11, but managed 7 pts and a game-high 5 asts. PF IkeMuoneke came off the bench to add 11 pts on 5-for-5 shooting.
