Glendale 72, West LA 71

Ctr Jamar Eubanks scored the winning basket with 0.5 seconds left on a lay-up after a three-quarter-court-length pass from PF Owen Duckworth to give #10 Glendale (7-3) a dramatic 72-71 win over WSC-South rival West LA (6-7) in the day’s first game at the Roadrunner Round-Up at Rio Hondo College.

Eubanks’ basket came shortly after PG Josh Gordon gave West LA a 71-70 lead with a running bank shot with 8.5 seconds remaining. After that basket, Duckworth committed a turnover, throwing the ball out of bounds. Glendale then fouled Gordon on the inbounds play, sending him to the line with 3.8 seconds left. But he missed the front end of the 1-and-1, and Duckworth got the rebound with 2.9 seconds left. Glendale immediately called timeout, and set up the winning play.

It was a back-and-forth game between division rivals, with neither team leading by more than 9 points the whole game. Glendale jumped out to the early lead, going ahead 4-0 on 4 points by Eubanks, and led 19-11 at one point. But then West LA scored the game’s next 9 points, going ahead, 20-19, after a floater from SF Tim Jackson went through the net with just over 8 minutes left before halftime. Glendale went back in front, pushing out to a 5-point lead at 32-27 after a three by Duckworth, but West LA scored the next 8 points, going ahead 35-32 on a FG+FT 3-point play by PG Dhafir Washington at taking a 35-33 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

West LA began the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 9-point lead at 42-33, but then it was Glendale’s turn to rally and the Vaqueros raced back into the lead on SF Antony Phillips’ steal & basket that made it 46-44. Then Glendale gradually built a 7-point lead at 64-57 only to see West LA rally and take a 69-67 lead on a Gordon three with 1:25 left.

Down the stretch, the lead went back and forth with Glendale closing to within a point on a free throw by PG Brandon Robnett For Glendale, Duckworth led the way with 23 pts while Eubanks added 22 plus a team-high 7 rebs. PF Ralph Monday came off the bench and chipped in 10 pts. Robnett added 6 pts and a game-high 6 asts for the Vaqueros.

For West LA, Gordon had 19 pts and 3 asts. SG Chris Walton came off the bench to have a huge game with 15 pts and 7 rebs. PF Darryl Taylor had his usual strong all-around game with 8 pts, 6 rebs, 2 blocks and 4 steals. But the Oilers certainly missed standout SF Jerard Moret, who is out with a broken hand.
