Canyons (3-4) made a miraculous finish to claim a 71-70 win over Mira Costa (3-3). Trailing by 6 with under a minute to play, the Cougars rallied to win on a free throw by SG Curtis Dunwoody with 1.7 seconds left. PG Jordan Surratt had nailed a three with 51.9 seconds left to cut the margin to 3. Then, after a missed shot by PF Matt January, COC got the rebound with just over 10 seconds left. They got the ball to SF Carlton Spencer, who drained a three with 3.6 seconds left to tie the game. On the ensuing inbounds play, Mira Costa Ctr Owen Olson threw the ball out of bounds for a turnover. Then when COC got the ball, they inbounded to Dunwoody, who drew a foul on SF Ralph Williams, and made the first resulting free throw. He missed the second on purpose, as Mira Costa was out of timeouts and even after grabbing the rebound the Spartans failed to get a last-second shot away, giving Canyons a most unlikely win.
Spencer led Canyons with 22 pts, while Ctr Andrew Morris added 15 and 8 rebs. Surratt had 14 including 4 threes. Williams led Mira Costa with 25 including 4 threes, and 7 boards. PG Ricky Martinez had 16 pts on 5/5 shooting including 4 threes. SG Mark Sammons had a game-high 7 asts.
