Antelope Valley 63, Canyons 60

PG Jacobe Shannon came off the bench to score 18 pts and dish out 5 asts and SF Ade Dagunduro posted a double-double as host #3 Antelope Valley (11-1) topped #12 College of the Canyons (8-2), 63-60, to win the Rancho Vista Shootout in Lancaster.

Shannon finished as the game’s high scorer, and his 3 threes helped AVC rally from a 10-point first-half deficit. COC led 19-9 early on before a pair of Shannon threes helped cut the margin to 6 at 27-21. And at the first half buzzer, Shannon drew a 3-shot foul and made all 3 free throws to make it a 4-point game at 30-26 at the break.

In the second half, COC continued to lead until Dagunduro made a jumper, drew the foul and made the free throw to put AVC ahead, 40-39, with 14:46 to play. The lead went back and forth from there, with COC taking a 55-53 lead with 6:07 to play on a pair of free throws by SG Dwayne Jones.

For the next four minutes, the only points came on a basket by Dagunduro on a feed from SG Reggie Arnold that tied the game with just under 4 minutes left. The game remained tied at 55 as the clock ticked down below two minutes.

Then with 1:48 left, AVC took a 1-point lead on a free throw by Arnold. Then PF JaVaughn Espritt stole the ball in the frontcourt, and got the ball to Shannon, who took it most of the length of the court and scored to make it 58-55 with 1:32 left. And after another Espritt steal, PG Brice Gallow scored on a putback to make it 60-55. And after still another steal, this one by Gallow, Shannon made a free throw to make it 61-55 with 30 seconds remaining.

But COC still had time to rally, and the Cougars pulled to within three when SF Kenya Ward drained a threee with 22.4 seconds left. After a foul and another Shannon free throw, it as 62-58. But COC PG Gino Riney scored on a lay-up to cut the margin to 62-60. Shannon added another free throw to make it 63-60 with 10.7 seconds left. COC still had the chance to tie the game, but SG Andre Murray’s three in the final seconds bounced off the rim.

Shannon was named the tournament’s Inspirational Player for his performance. Dagunduro, who finished with 16 pts and 11 rebs, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Arnold, who added 16 pts, Espritt and Gallow made the all-tournament team.

For Canyons, Ctr Everett Bryson led the way with 14 pts and 15 rebs. Murray had 10 pts and 7 rebs, and Ward added 9 pts on 3 threes. Jones had 8 pts and joined Bryson and Ward, who had 7 threes in COC’s first-round win vs. Mt. San Jacinto, on the all-tournament team.
