PF Brandon Dempster had 28 pts, including 5 threes and 4 free throws in the final 16.6 seconds, and Moorpark(3-6) managed to hold on for an 80-78 win over Fullerton (4-5) in the Third Place Game of the Rancho Vista Shootout at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster.
Moorpark led for most of the game, but had to survive Fullerton rallies late in each half. In the first half, the Raiders held a 37-21 edge before the Hornets scored the last 13 points of the half to trail by just 3 at halftime, 37-34.
And in the second half, Moorpark held a 15-point lead at 72-57, but saw all but one point of that lead disappear down the stretch. Fullerton Ctr Bryan LeDuc scored on a fourth-chance putback to make it 76-73, and was fouled on the play. He missed the free throw, but then SF Ray Magee scored on the putback of the foul shot to make it 76-75 in the final minute.
With time running out, Fullerton had no choice but to foul, and they sent Dempster to the line with 16.6 seconds left. And he drained both free throws to make it 78-75. But it was still a one-possession game and now Fullerton had the ball.
But the Hornets couldnt quite draw even. PF Rodrick Johnson and SG Amir Nelson each missed threes, and when LeDuc appeared to grab what would have been his 30th rebound of the game, he was instead whistled for a loose ball foul. Dempster, who was fouled on the play, calmly sank both free throws to make it 80-75. Fullerton PG Manuel Fierros canned a three at the buzzer to account for the final score.
Fullerton lost despite an amazing game by LeDuc, who finished with 12 pts and an astounding total of 29 rebounds. (That would seem to break the tournament record of 26, but somehow he was officially credited with 25 boards). And Johnson had a monster game with 16 pts and 16 rebs, despite finishing just 2-for-17 from the floor. Magee also had a strong game, scoring a team-best 24 pts and joining Dempster on the all-tournament team.
