Ctr Nick Frey scored 19 pts and grabbed 11 rebs to lead host West Valley to a narrow victory over #9 Ohlone. PG Aaron Lawrence scored 10 of his 12 pts in the first half to help WVC to a 26-14 lead at intermission. PF Colton Cornfoot had a strong all-around game with 9 pts, 6 rebs and 6 asts, and he hit 4 of 6 FTs in the final minute to help the Vikings hold on for the win.
Ohlone rallied after a horrible first half (6/24 FGs plus 12 turnovers). And after a 3-pointer by PG Brendan Erickson to start the second half, the Renegades missed their next 10 shots to fall behind by 15 at 32-17, at which time their FG% had dropped to a startling 20% (7/35). They rallied behind some good outside shooting by SF Mychal Green and reserve G Vershan Cottrell to narrow the gap to 42-40 with 5:37 left, but after a 3-pointer by Cornfoot and 4 FTs by SG Ryan Madry, West Valley regained control.
For Ohlone, ranked #9 in the state entering the game, PF Matt Burkholder led the way with 14 pts and also added 5 asts. Green finished with 11 pts. Ctr Jared Ines led Ohlone with 7 boards. SG Ronnie Holmes had 9 pts and 4 steals.
For the Vikings, Frey's 19 pts and 11 rebs were game-highs, as were Cottonham's 6 asts. Lawrence added 5 asts and 3 steals to his 12 pts. SG Ryan Madry finished with 14 pts, including 6/6 FTs, and had 3 steals.
