
#1-ranked and previously undefeated City College of San Francisco suffered their first loss of the season to Skyline, 91-74, Wednesday in front of a large and rowdy crowd at San Bruno.
PG David Doubley led the Trojans, scoring 26 pts and adding 8 asts plus 5 rebs. C Tremaine Fuqua also scored 26 pts, tying Doubley for game honors. He also added 5 rebs and 4 asts. C/F Bill Day led Skyline with 6 rebs off the bench.
CCSF was led by reserve G/F Mike Watters, who scored 21 pts including 5 threes. SG Derrick Tarver, who leads the state in scoring and averages nearly 30 pts per game, was held to 18 pts. Tarver, who was defended mostly by F Robert Kately and G Dante Sykes, missed his first 7 shots and finished just 6 of 20 from the floor. Tarver had just 2 pts (on 2 FTs) at halftime, going 0-6 from the field in the 1st half.
Skyline took the lead in the first few minutes of the game, and never lost it. The advantage grew to 20 in the first half at 41-21 before a CCSF rally narrowed the gap to 45-33 at the half. Fuqua led Skyline with 17 pts in the 1st half. Watters’ 11 pts including 3 threes helped keep CCSF close.
Early in the 2nd half, Skyline extended the lead back to 20 at 59-39. CCSF, behind Tarver’s strong inside play, rallied to trail by just 6 at 74-68 with just over 5 minutes left, and still trailed by just 6 at 80-74 with 1:40 left. But Doubley scored 8 of Skyline’s final 11 pts to put the game away.
Five Trojans scored in double figures: Doubley, Fuqua, SG Michael Schoonmaker (11 pts), SF Hasan Houston and Sykes (10 pts each). SF Vince Fowler put on an awesome aerial display, finishing with 17 pts on 6 of 9 from the floor which included 4 spectacular dunks. PG Jacques Kent and PF Justin Hassell tied for game-high with 8 rebs each. Kent and Tarver each dished out 4 assists.
With the win, Skyline moves to 22-9. In the most recent COA poll, the Trojans are ranked #8 in the North and #14 in California. CCSF falls to 29-1.
