FLINDERS UNIVERSITY SOCCER CLUB

Season 2003

Flinders v Adelaide Comets

24th May 2003

Reserves

We travelled away this week, to meet the comets on their home turf, intent on sticking with the winning ways that we managed to find last week. The weather was cool, the ground in less than perfect condition but far from abominable and we were full of confidence after our domination last week.

We managed to put some pressure on their goal early, but failed to put the shots on target.

Unfortunately, we then let the cat out of the bag when we conceded the first goal of the game and found ourselves in the all too familiar position of trying to play catch up soccer.

Ten minutes later though, DT won the ball wide on the left in our offensive third and after being knocked down twice and getting up to recover the ball, measured a shot from five yards off the top left corner of the penalty area to delicately curl the ball into the far top corner of the net, beating the outstretched hand of the keeper to level the scores.

We continued to play some scrappy soccer, not really living up to our potential until the ball was played through the middle and then wide to Sean who played it back in to Matt cruising through the midfield. Matt received the ball at the top of the box and made no mistake in slotting the ball past the keeper to bring the score to 2-1 in favour of the good guys.

Rob deserves mention in goals for several great saves in the first half that kept us in the game and was probably the difference between the two teams at that point.

That was the score at half time and we emerged from the change rooms ready to run at them again and finish off the game.

We were unlucky not to have a goal early in the second half when John Lalor challenged the keeper, nodding the ball out of his hands and putting it into the net. The ref called it as a foul on the keeper which in all honesty was a fair call.

Moments later, John amended the error when he chased a defender down and disposed him of the ball. The subsequent shot deflected off the chest of the keeper and John made no mistake with his second effort finishing it off.

Things came off the rails at about that point. John was subbed due to a groin injury shortly followed by Sean who was removed for first team bench duties.

About this time, John Lavandar clumsily fell into the back of one of their forwards in the box and the subsequent penalty put the bad dudes only a goal behind us.

When DT pulled up lame with yet another hamstring injury, we seemed to have lost any ability to go forward with the ball and saw ourselves camped in the defensive third, trying to see out the game through a series of desperate tackles and saves.

We were nearly a goal down when Rob went down following one such desperate save that put him on the bottom of a pile of bodies. The cleared ball fell to one of that lot who despite desperate calls to put the ball out, decided to shoot at the untended goal. Fortunately the ref blew the game up before the goal could count.

Trying to hold onto a one goal lead for 20 minutes with a diminished side on the park ended up being too much of an ask for us and when they broke down the right and cut the ball back from the line, it was slotted into the goal at the back post, despite having been missed by at least 2 of their players as it traversed the box.

JP Nearly put us back in the game in the dying stages with a great free kick taken from 30 yards, but the keeper turned it out for a corner, but we had to settle for a draw.

Final Score: 3-30

First Team

I couldn't stay to watch the game this week, but did see enough to make mention of one note-worthy piece of work.

Greg Videon, eight yards out from our defensive goal, facing the posts, cleared the ball via a direct hit on the cross-bar and upright. Nice one Greggy.

Final Score: 0-5
