On deck duties

The on-deck circle is just like all places on a baseball field: There is a job to be done.

The man in the circle is essentially a traffic director...

First of all, while awaiting their turn at bat, players can root for or encourage the hitter at home plate. The on-deck batter may even be able to help the hitter by telling him to keep his head on the ball when he is pulling off the pitches. The on-deck batter can also advise the hitter to run on a third strike that may elude the catcher.

The man in the circle is essentially a traffic director: It's his job to help the runner coming in to score. The on-deck batter can advise a runner to slide or stand up and can even direct his slide to one side or the other depending on the flight of the incoming throw. It's also important for the on deck batter to get the bat or mask out of the base line prior to the runner reaching home plate. This will help prevent injury.

This spot on the field best exemplifies what putting on a baseball uniform is all about: No matter where you are on a baseball field, you have to be heads up and alert—there is always a job to be done!
