Fly Ball Jump Step

Start in the defensive stance. Run quickly to the spot where the ball is headed. Hold your glove up over your head and make the catch. Catch the ball with your glove-side leg forward, then jump off that foot. As you land on your throwing-side foot, shift your weight back, bring your arm back and throw the ball.

"The jump step gives you lots of momentum in the direction you throw the ball, resulting in a fast, strong throw."

  • Stay in line with the ball and your throwing target
  • Begin turning your glove side toward the infield
  • Take the ball out of your glove
  • Place your fingers over the wide seams of the ball

  • Move forward in the direction of your target
  • Shift your weight back onto your throwing-side foot
  • Land
  • Angle your front shoulder toward your throwing target

Skills Drills

Hundred foot drill

Practice the jump step with a partner. Stand 100 feet apart and throw long fly balls to one another. Run in to field the balls and take a jump step as you throw the ball back to your partner

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Practice solo

You can practice the jump step simply by lofting the ball high into the air, catching it and taking a jump step. You do not need to release the ball to practice the basic motion.

Troubleshooting Tips

Turn Your Shoulder to the Target

If you have trouble throwing accurately on the jump step, focus on turning your shoulder toward your target. As you land, throw normally, allowing your forward momentum to give you extra velocity on the ball.

Trouble Transitioning?

If you have trouble with the transition into the jump step, focus on catching the ball while your glove-side foot is forward. This sets up the rest of the move.
