Maz's Pages for Katie

These pages are for Katie. Someone I have never met nor likely to meet - but one of lifes good people, and someone I hope that lists me as one of her friends. If you are not Katie and found yourself here by accident then you probably won't find any of this interesting. If you are Katie - then welcome.

Katie - you once told me that you know how to minimize and how to Left Click and Right Click but that was about it. You also told me you didn't really understand Copy and Paste. So on this page I'll start with those. I know you won't think of it as patronizing - because we have already had that conversation! LOL!

1.1 MAXIMIZING.

Once you have Minimized a program it goes down onto the blue bar at the bottom of your screen. This blue bar is often referred to as the 'Taskbar'. In the image below you will see that I've got three programs minimized on there. To restore the programs back to full screen - simply click onto their little boxes in the Taskbar.

1.2 COPY AND PASTE.

This is an operation that we may use in the 'Sell your Item' section of these help notes. But it is also very useful for many other things. It is a standard way of transferring text or info between many Window programs. (Programs are also sometimes referred to as 'Applications').

The basics of the Copy and Paste operation is that we first 'Highlight' the text we are interested in, then we copy it to a 'Clipboard'. (Think of this Clipboard as working in the background and as a short - term, invisible memory). Then we go to the program we want to copy the text TO, and then we 'Paste' the text in there. It is a far easier operation to do than it is to explain. So please don't be put off at this stage.

Highlighting.

Highlighted text looks like the text below. It appears on a reverse-color background. The color may be blue instead of black, or even some other color.

The next picture - shows the mouse operations that we use in order to highlight text. BUT you will not be able to click on it within the frame, because it is a picture! I have typed the text for you to practice on BELOW the next picture!

Go ahead - highlight the text below.....

> TABLE width="95%" bgColor=lightblue border=4>

TBODY>

TR> TD>

Center>

TYPE YOU ITEM DESCRIPTION HERE p> /td> /tr> /tbody> /table>

end copying.

Now that we have the text Highlighted, let go of the mouse. Hold down the 'Ctrl' key on you keyboard. (It is on the extreme bottom left on my keyboard). With this key still held down. Hit the 'C' key just once. NOTHING seems to have happened. BUT IT HAS. You have just COPIED the highlighted text to the 'invisible' clipboard! You used what is know as a Keyboard Shortcut to copy the text TO it. In a moment - hit the email link to me below and in the 'message' part, click the mouse once. Then Hold the 'Ctrl' key down and hit the 'V' key just once. 'Ctrl V' is the Keyboard shortcut to 'Paste'. The text should now appear in the mail message. Send me that mail, and I'll know when you got to this stage!
