Once the protostar star reaches about 7 million Kelvin, nuclear fusion begins. The star stops contracting, as the fusion reactions trying to make the star expand counteract the effect of gravity trying to make it collapse.

A young star sometimes also emits jets of intense radiation and heat. These can be billions of kilometers long.
