About me

My name is Amar Sharma. A Libran born in 1984, I'm born in and have spent the first 13 years of my life in Thane city (those of you who don't know it can take it to be Mumbai). Then we had to shift to Bangalore. It was here that my astronomy life had a start. I still have no clue as to how I entered this field. Maybe, it's just fascination of infinity, the mysteries of this universe.

Then when I was in college I had a visit to our local planetarium from where I came to know about an amateur astronomy association, where I was a regular member for 3 years. This is the place which introduced me to night-sky and allowed a first-timer to do new things in astronomy on his own. My insatiable dream's to DISCOVER A COMET !!! I am sure someday I'll have MY COMET !!  Comets are what I, literally dream day and night!!!

In June 2003 one of my friend was kind enough to lend me his 6" Reflecting dobsonian telescope for a year, nicknamed then as "Time Machine" , because of which I could start observing on my own and get fascinated by new sights I could never imagine. I have now finished a 10" f/5.1 telescope now. But it's optics aren't good so I'm thinking of replacing it with a new mirror only and also purchasing a big binocular up for general deep-sky observing and comet-hunting too. Later on I will be completing my 8.5" f/3 and 10.5" f/8 later on, the glasses of which are lying with me. My observing friend Akarsh Simha has been extremely involved in my progress in deep-sky observing because he has been supporting me by letting me use his 8" f/8 equatorial telescope more than he has used it! I've managed to see more than 400 objects with it, my latest count!!! Now I'm waiting for something of my own...

My other fantasies include making large telescopes, taking some great astro-photos, discovering at least one comet/asteroid, visiting astronomical observatories and some of the best possible darkest-locations worldwide, visiting some ancient astro-historical sites and contributing something new to the field of astronomy and a lot, lot more. I crave day and night to have my own observatory for mainly comets research.

Our group of amateurs in Bangalore is ever growing, and now we've managed to get it registered. It's called
Bangalore Astronomical Society (B.A.S) and consists of a number of people in different fields. I plan to form a bigger group of people coming together to do astronomy on a much larger scale. Here are two newspaper appearances of our group in Deccan Herald newspaper; the first one (dated: November 17 2006) is a general introduction about our group, and the second one (dated: December 10 2006) is THE most awaited one!! You can also download the original first article & second article in .pdf format to be able to read by clicking on the respective link. The second one features our names with our group members into comets and comet-hunting. We are very thankful to our kind journalist friend who made this possible, what we wanted to express about our passions in this field to all!!

I've started a general astronomy-based yahoo group and another group devoted to only amateur comet research in India (probably Asia's only yahoo-group!!) on internet wherein people from anywhere can take part in our activities and be a part of what we've been planning to do here in telescope making, astrophotography, observing and other activities.

I'll like to involve with other astronomy associations or amateur astronomers. Anyone interested, can contact me.

That's a bit of my history....Until then......
