OVERVIEW
Ever got lost in your very own campus?
Don't you just wish to get to know your campus a little better? A
very informative and innovative means of doing this is just a
click away.
An elite team of
computer science students will design and develop the UP
Diliman Interactive. This will be a virtual tour of the
University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus which makes use of
2D maps (representing roads and paths) and 3D models (representing
buildings and landmarks). It will allow users to explore and
experience UP in the most visual and vivid way while giving out
information about the campus.
The UP Diliman
Interactive will be most beneficial and will be a great addition
to the existing UP website. At present, it has 2D maps for the
different campuses. The Diliman campus map, for instance, simply
has labels for the establishments and roads. This project will be
more than just identifying buildings or pointing to links of other
sites. UP Diliman Interactive has a graphical advantage since the
3D representations of objects provide a more realistic feel as
opposed to the typical click-on-text method. Its original and
graphically enhanced features will be very appealing to users.
WORK DISTRIBUTION
The development
of the UP Diliman Interactive will involve four aspects, namely:
research, graphics, programming and website publishing.
The following are
descriptions of each and the team members that are responsible for
each task:
-
Research:
consists mostly of gathering of data which includes roads and
paths around the campus, building architectures and descriptions
and other necessary information.
-
Graphics:
this aspect will consist primarily of the rendering of the
project in 3D, and other graphics-related portion of the
project. The software that we planned to use is 3D Studio Max,
but may change accordingly.
-
Programming:
deals with most of the coding, encoding of the data and
debugging. The team planned Java as the main programming
language to use.
-
Web:
responsible for the publishing of all the works and all
web-related tasks, including the maintenance of the website.
SOFTWARES Used in
the Project UPDi
Our team
considered the following software to be used to create our
project. All of these may or may not be used, depending on the
needs.
-
MacromediaŽ
Dreamweaver: To create and shape the webpages of UPD
Interactive.
MacromediaŽ Flash:
Used to deploy the virtual map in
an interactive environment.
-
3D Studio
Max: As opposed to designing the objects in Java3D,
designing them in high-end 3D animation programs such as AutoCad
and 3D Studio Max will require a loader function in order for
the objects to work in Java. On the contrary, 3d smax offers
ease in modeling the objects, as some members of the team are
familiar with the graphics software. And if the team is
determined in using 3d smax, another option will be to convert
the files to VRML files.
