Spad started in 1998 when Collin "Kraut" McGinnis and Dean "Tattoo" Tuinstra designed a cheap and quick building plastic airplane for R/C combat. Never did they dream that this concept would become so popular and spark such cheap, fun, creative scratch building around the world. In 2001, Jan "Sassy" Stout purchased www.spadtothebone.com. William "Mr. Clean" Crane and Chuck "Chunky C" Meyers donate their webmaster expertise to help Kraut, Sassy and Tattoo make it what it is today!

SPAD UK

I came across the spadtothebone website by mistake when I was searching the web for planes to download for the FMS simulator. Having recently taken up r/c flying and already lost 2 planes and crashed a couple of others (our flying site is quite small and surrounded by huge trees !!) the SPAD concept seemed to be the answer to my prayers. I had previously built a balsa kit and decided that building was not for me and that in future I would only buy ARTF kits or second hand planes. I searched the web for ARTF SPAD kits and found that the choice was limited to 3 suppliers in the UK who all seemed to be charging what I consider a lot of money for a "piece of plastic pipe and some Correx  board" so the decision was made to have another go at building.  After a couple of days searching the web for supplies I managed to locate a length of down pipe and a 8x4 sheet of 4 mm correx. 4 hours later I was the proud owner of a SPAD Dominator. It was so easy to build following the plans and tips on the spadtothebone website and the best bit was, it only cost about £8-00 to build the airframe. You can check the result of my first test flight from my report on the SPAD forum HERE. With the remaining correx and down pipe I made 2 more planes, a DasPlaStic and a Pizza box which have both proved to be fantastic planes to build and fly. After a lot of enquiries from people at the flying field regarding supplies etc I decided to have a go at producing this website with the intention of promoting the SPAD concept in the UK.. I also intend to produce a selection of SPAD kits at a reasonable price (hope to be about £15-00 per kit) for those not interested in building themselves. If you would like more info please do not hesitate to contact me or if you can get to Croydon your more then welcome to come and have a go of a SPAD.
