Science Centre and Planetarium

Fairy Meadow, about 1km north of Wollongong.

It is a self supporting facility operated by the University of Wollongong and is open 7 days per week (10am to 4pm) plus Friday evenings (laser concerts) and some Saturday evenings (astronomy discovery nights). The ($5m) building was rebuilt in 2000 after the floods of '98. Attendance growing - now approx 80,000 per annum.

There are two floors of exhibition space. Exhibitions change often. This year, exhibitions have included Seachest' and 'Einstein' exhibition (from Israel). Current exhibitions are Zap!, Energy and Motion, Changing World, Vision and More than Dinosaurs (from Aust. Museum). Exhibits are a mixture of hands-on and off.  e.g. Cryolophosaurus and various other fossils such as a Tarbosaurus skull.  There is an exhibition (curated by the Power House Museum and the Science Centre) dealing with Lawrence Hargrave- not only his flight achievements but also his other inventions (solar power, calculators, and unusual propulsion systems for ships). There is an exhibition of David Malin's photography. The Centre includes a science theatre, observatory and the state's major planetarium (Zeiss ZKP3) . Current planetarium shows (4) include 'Mars - Return to the Red Planet'. Laser shows ('laser magic' - family show) run  at 1pm and there is a Pink Floyd ('Best of Echoes') laser concert every Friday evening. The observatory houses a research quality DFM reflector.

The Science Centre Shop is the largest of the Australian hands-on science centres. Everything from science novelties to telescopes.

There are many special events including public lectures - next one is Wed 14th Aug - Mike Archer - 'Bringing Back the Thylacine'. Bookings needed as tickets ($8 and $5 student) are selling quickly (02 42 865000).
