Jessica's Universe: Literature: John Saul

The Right Hand of Evil is John Saul

(well, that title was better than saying the John was "Unwanted" or "Unloved")

Hmm...where to start. John Saul is my favorite author!! Okay, now that that is out... But really, he is. His novels are real page-turners, the kind of book you can't put down until it is finished. As far as categorizing his genre, he writes thrillers or horror. John is Dean Koontz or Stephen King-esque, but he is THE master of terror! His writing style is amazing. John uses just enough detail to keep you in the story, but not too much so that you are bored. Check out more about him below.

About John:
John Saul was born in Pasadena, California on February 25, 1942. He later dropped out of college and became a writer. After several years, he found an agent in New York and in 1976, one of his manuscripts reached Dell. Dell did not want to buy it, but asked if he'd be interested in writing a psychological thriller. From there, Suffer the Children was born. The book appeared on all the best-seller lists in the country and made the #1 spot in Canada. Since then, all 30 of his books have made all the best-seller lists and have been published world wide.

    Reviews:
    Amanda's reviews:
  • Midnight Voices. It's a great book and very chilling. Very creepy, and very imaginative. After I finished reading it I wouldn't have been surprised if I had had nightmares. But I didn't, of course.
  • Black Lightning, my above all favorite book of his. It was very well written and I hope that it is made into a movie as well. I could hardly put this book down. It's like you could be any one of those characters in the book and as you read it it's playing it's self though your mind and in your imagination like a movie. Great book!
  • Cry for Strangers. I was dissappointed in it. It is a good book, don't get me wrong, but it's so slow.

  • John Saul: A Critical Companion (1996). A non fiction book by Paul Bail. You can buy it from Amazon.com.
  • The Blackstone Chronicles: An Adventure in Terror CD-ROM game. Playing is definitely worth it, especially if you have read the books to know the details about the characters/asylum. But reading the books first is not necessary, the game is enough all on it's own. You can find out more info about the game from The Game Zone.
