Album
name: Leave
I have never listened to her albums - always a song here, a song there - never a full album. This would have to be the first. And I've got to say I am impressed. There are a variety of musical styles here and Stefanie switches between them with utmost ease. Her voice just seems to adjust on its own accord depending on song. Synthesizer pop, ballads, rock, hip-hop, acoustical versions, whatever. And this is what makes the album a delight to listen to as well. You could call it experimental yet at the same time, it is very much commercial. Leave has a total of 12 tracks altogether - with one of them being an English piece. My favourite is track 4 (Straightforward) which has a hip-hop feel and tends to remind one of that song by Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood. Then there's the gentle ballad of track 2 (I don't love) and the soft rock track 3 (Understand matters). Stefanie contributes her own piece here too: track 8 (Eye soul) in which she penned the music. It's an average piece which I can't help but think that Stefanie could have maybe done better. The English track here is by Dick Lee and was written for Singapore's National Day. Entitled Together we go, it, kind of, sounds rather David Fosterish. And since I like the stuff that David Foster churns out, I rather like this piece too. And yes, Stefanie can sing in English. There's a Mandarin version of this same song too. This album is a definite must-get. Judging by the songs, Leave will very likely be another runaway success for Stefanie Sun. And I just have to say that I think she is probably Singapore's best musical export of late. Move aside Kit Chan (if you haven't already moved aside, that is). Recommended
