| CHAPTER
4: A TANGLED WEB
The young man crashed into the room still clutching onto his files and documents. He was a picture of disarray. “What in the world happened to you? You look like you just escaped the Apocalypse or something,” the guy sitting behind the desk in the room looked up in surprise. He plopped himself down onto the chair and slammed the documents and files on the desk. “As far as I’m concerned, it was the Apocalypse,” he exclaimed. His friend looked on in amusement. “Well, look on the bright side. You survived the Apocalypse. There’s a huge tabloid story there,” he grinned. The young man nodded his head listlessly. “Right...Profit from a friend’s misfortune, why don’t you.” “You know I won’t do that. I’ll split it 50-50 with you,” his friend laughed. A knock on the door interrupted their little session. A woman’s head peeped in from behind it. “Ah, Michael, I thought I’d find you here,” she said as she opened the door wider and walked into the room towards the young man. “Hello Natasha,” the other one behind the desk greeted her. As if noticing for the first time that there was someone else in the room besides Michael, she turned towards the other guy. “Oh Sean, you’re here too,” she said with unconcealed disdain. “Of course, I’m here. This is, after all, my office,” he mumbled to himself. “Darling,” Natasha whined as she stroked Michael’s arm. “It’s lunch time. Let’s get some food. I’m hungry.” “I’m all ready, honey,” Michael smiled as he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her towards him and planted a kiss on her lips. “Catch you later, bud,” he said to Sean as he got up and left with Natasha. Sean rolled his eyes as he watched his friend follow her out like a little puppy dog. I really don’t get what it is Michael sees in her. I mean, besides the fact that she’s gorgeous, has a great bod and is extremely rich. Hey! Get a grip on yourself, fella! She’s also conniving, sly and to say the least, the perfect description of a bitch, Sean reminded himself. He sighed and diverted his attention back to his work. SLAM! Sean dropped his pen out of shock and looked up at the tornado that had come crashing into his room. What is it with today anyway, he thought. This is the second freak of nature that I’ve encountered in less than an hour. A disgruntled, disheveled and flustered body stood before him. “Ellen?” She grunted and sat down in front of him. “Sorry, I’m late. Don’t ask me what happened, okay? Let’s just say I ran into a jurassic case of bad luck.” “You sure it wasn’t the Apocalypse?” Sean teased. “Huh? What?” Ellen looked at him. Sean grinned. “Nevermind,” he shook his head. Then Ellen suddenly realised why she was there. “Oops,” she looked at Sean sheepishly as she tried to straighten out her hair and smooth down her clothes. “How bad do I look?” “Well, let’s put it this way...if I didn’t already know you, I would probably have called security in a long time ago,” he grinned. She smiled back cheekily. “Nah, it must have been my beauty that mesmerised you so much that you forgot to pick up the phone to call security.” Sean laughed as he got up and walked over to her side. “You haven’t changed a bit. Still as ever so full of yourself.” Then extending his hand to her, he said, “Come on, I’ve been waiting for you for 30 minutes. Let’s go grab something to eat. I’m starving!” Ellen took his hand and pulled herself up. “What are we having? Are you treating? If you are, I suggest we go somewhere expensive,” she giggled. Spyda frowned as she
watched the progress of the two threads that Chance had inadvertedly brought
together. So far, so good. But how long this was going to last, heaven
only knows, she worried. Then again, maybe Chance was right. Maybe I’m
just being overly pessimistic. Then she shook her head. No way, dummy.
You should know better than to take what Chance says seriously, she scolded
herself as she walked out of her office. She didn’t notice the little
flicker on the screen as the other threads that were initially interwoven
with the two that Chance had interfered with, slowly lengthened and meshed
with one another to form one big mass of tangled web. |
