Album
name: WITH My first reaction: Cool. A duet album of original songs with some of Hong Kong's music industry's biggest names (also there was Sandy Lam singing a Cantonese number!) Alas, With didn't live up to the expectations I had for it - I had expected it to be a classic. Well, a classic it is not - its shortcomings, ironically, stem from the duets themselves. A total of 12 tracks altogether (although track 12 is a rearrangement of track 1) - 4 of the tracks are duets with females and the other 7 with males. Behold the star-studded 'cast' of Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Andy Hui, William So, Anthony Wong, Faye Wong, Sandy Lam, Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen. Some of the duets sound rather funny - very likely due to the fact that Anita's voice is pretty low and when she duets with the males especially, most of them either have to go a key higher or lower to accommodate her. Having said that, the duets with the males are definitely a better listen compared to the female ones. There didn't seem to be much chemistry between Anita and the female singers - and hearing the female duets, the voices sounded out of place and didn't seem to complement each other well. One of the disappointments was the song with Sandy Lam, Two Women - Sandy's voice just sounds really tired in there. A pity really, because it is a rather nice number. Passerby A B with Alan Tam is an interesting affair...it certainly is different. Of the lot, I thought she sounded the best with Jacky Cheung in Love is Difficult - a beautiful piece with wonderful vocals and great harmony from both singers. Other recommended tracks would be Date with Anthony Wong, Two Candies with William So and track 11 with Andy Hui. Not
great. But not bad either. There are enough good pieces in here to warrant
a purchase. |
