Insane Friends

Duo Maxwell looked out the window of his room on the second floor of the Yomen Home for the Mental Ill. Outside the head nurse was talking to two cops as they pulled a boy about his age with short mop of dark hair from the car in handcuffs. It took both of them to drag him into the building and through the locked gate that lead to freedom. Duo smiled. He would have a new friend to talk to.

Heero Yuy was uncuffed by one of the officers just inside the locked gated and the other sat down his case. The cops left him in the care of the head nurse a ugly women with short black hair and blue eyes, her uniform was tight on her and showed her large stomach through the clothing.

She looked at the chart in her hand then back at the sixteen-year-old. "Mr. Heero Yuy let me be the first to welcome you to the Yomen Home of the Mental Ill."

The boy gave her a cold stare but she just brushed it off. "Follow me" She walked through what looked like a living place with tables a couch and a small black and white TV There were a girl about his age with long reddish brown hair. She turned when they entered and as soon as she say Heero she jumped up and fled down one of two hallways that formed a Y that lead to the living space. "As you can see this is the Living room, down the right hallway is the women's rooms and to the left the men's." She started down the left hallways and stopped at a small white door at the end of the hallway and pulled the door open. The room was a mess. Clothing books and other thing where thrown around. There was a small bed, desk, chair and dress. One the mess side and then on the other side was the same only empty. Siting on his unmade bed with his feet up against the wall and his head over the edge was a young boy about Heero's age. He wore all black from his head all the way down to his shoes. He had a long braid that laid on the floor beside him like a snake. He had the prettiest violet eyes that Heero had ever seen.

"Duo, why don't you ever clean this Hell hole?"

"Ah, come one nurse Jan your cramping my personal space, beside you're the third nurse today to tell me that."

The nurse named Jan shock her head and looked at Heero who stood behind her still holding his small case.

"This is your new room mate Duo Maxwell, Duo this is Mr. Heero Yuy. Try to be nice ok. Dinner will be served at 6:00 in the dining room. Duo can you show him around I have to do my rounds?"

Duo nodded and the nurse let Heero in shutting the door behind her.

Heero went to his side of the room and set his bag on his new bed. He couldn't wait until his eighteenth birthday and his change to get away. He opened his bed and unloaded and put away his clothing and other things quickly. He could feel Duo's eyes watching him. When he was down flopped off his bed and came over. "So if you don't mind me asking, why did they put you here, you don't look like the crazy type?"

Heero sighed. "The courts ordered me to come here." He replied looking at his braided roommate. On hearing the tone of Heero's voice Duo dropped the subject and gave Heero a tour of the place.

He stopped a door and smiled. He knocked on the door and after a few min it crewed open. There stood a boy dressed in pink shirt and white shorts. He had short blond hair and blue/green eyes. When he saw Duo he opened the door and let both in.

"You're new here. My name is Quatre, Quatre R. Winner."

Heero didn't say a word just looked around to room. It had been brightly designed with pink flowers and stuffed animals all around.

It looked like a room given to a little girl.

"This is Heero Yuy." He heard Duo said to Quatre.

Across the room was much different, It was painted black. It looked empty and bare. Siting in a chair near the window sat a tall bow with brown hair and wild bangs. He wore jeans and a blue turtleneck. Gloves covered his hands and he wore a mask on his right side of his face.

"That's Trowa Barton." Quatre said. Trowa looked up from the window at his name and Heero and Trowa made eye contact only for a moment before he returned to staring at something out the window. Quatre lead them outside into the hallway and shut the door behind him. "Trowa was burned in a horrible fire about a year ago. He lost his older sister in it." Quatre informed Heero as they walked down the hallway towards the dinning room. "So they sent him here, they thought he was crazy like the rest of us here." Duo joked smiling.

"DUO YOU'RE SO MEAN!"

They talked all the way to the dinning hall where they grabbed there gray trays and got some food siting down in the first row tables.

"YUCK, How can anyone eat this stuff." Duo moaned stabbing his meat with his fork. Quatre laugh to himself and started to eat. The blond jumped almost a foot when a black hair boy slammed down his plate.

"Heero this is our Pryo friend Chang Wufie, Wui-man this is Heero Yuy the new guy."

Wufie smiled and pulled a lighter out and lit it reaching over for Duo's braid that was to close to the flames. Duo yuped and lend back falling backwards out of his seat. Jan the nurse was coming by and saw Wufie and grabbed the lighter out of his hands.

"Chang you know you can't have those."

"HEY WOMEN GIVE ME THAT BACK, AND DON'T CALL ME BY MY GIVEN NAME!" The women just rolled her eyes and walked away. Defeated Wufie went back to his dinner. Duo got back in his chair and watched Wufie careful as he ate.

Heero looked around at everyone in the small dinning room. Then someone across the room got his eyes. The girl from before sat at the window seat looking out, the food tray in her lap. She was pretty her long hair pulled into double braids. She wore blue jeans, a purple sleeveless shirt under a jacket.

"Who's that?" Heero nodded towards the girl. Duo looked up from his dinner. "Who that, oh that's Serenity Peacecraft."

"Peacecraft, I've heard that name before." Heero mumbled to himself struggling to think.

"You should, Her twin sister Relena Peacecraft is a well know ambassador." Duo said between bites.

"Relena Peacecraft has a twin sister?" Heero said shocked. He had met the young ambassador once her and her older brother Millirdo who shortly after disappeared.

"Yea Relena don't like her sister very much, They would fight over everything. Relena got angry about Serena writing about war and sent her here." Quatre said looking over at the girl then back at Heero.

"Just because of her writing?" Heero asked looking at his tablemats.

"Well Serena lost her husband Lukas in the war. She started taking to the bottle. Relena said it for some rest, but everyone knows she sent her here to get her out of the way." Duo said he lend forward over the table to Heero. "Rumor is that Serena did Relena's boyfriend and he knocked her up."

Quatre was taking a drink of water when Duo said that and started choking Wufie lend over and hit Quatre hard on the back.

"Anyway" Duo went on.

"She don't talk much to anyone and no one wants to make friends with her."

"Why?" Heero asked

"Well she was a soldier in the war a year ago, she got many nicknames during the war, but the one they call her around here is the Perfect soldier, they say the girl killed three armed men four times her age with her bare hands. Everyone around here scarred of her. Beside she never talks to anyone. Won't let anyone in her room either." Duo finishes taking another bit of his dinner.

"The Perfect soldier huh?" Heero thought looking once more at the girl before returning to his dinner."

After dinner Heero and Duo walked Quatre back to his room so he could check on Trowa. Duo stopped him before he entered the room. "Quatre one more please."

"Alright Duo but this is the last time." Quatre answered. He looked down the hallway to make sure no nurse were watching then reached under his bed and pulled out a box. He opened it and handed Duo a small brown bottle.

"Thanks Q you're a life saver. Come one Heero I'll show how to get some real food." Duo said darting down the hallway.

He stopped at the Y and waited until no nurse was watching them Duo and Heero darted up the girl's rooms. They stopped at the door 16A.

Duo knocked softly. "GO AWAY" A female voice called from inside.

"Peacecraft, I got something you want."

The door opened just a little and Serena stuck her head out.

"What Maxwell?"

Duo pulled the little brown container from his pants pocket and smiled. "Food, for drink."

Serena's eyes lit up slightly and she stuck her head back in shutting the door behind her. There was a long pause and when Heero was sure Serena wasn't going to come back the door opened. Duo stepped inside followed closely by Heero. Serena had a single room, which kind of upset him that she got a room by herself and he was stuck in a room with Duo. Her room was dark like Trowa's. Her dresser was covered with metals and photos of her standing with a bunch of men. While Duo chat with Serena about the trade Heero made his way over to the dresser. The men in the photos looked happy and carefree and so did Serena all were dressed in millity uniforms. Beside the photos where five gold metals. Heero reached down and touched the metal they were cold. "HEY WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR FRIEND DOING?" Heero turned to see Serena and Duo staring at him. "Sorry I was just looking." Heero mumbled.

Serena stormed over to her dresser and pulled a box out from the drawer and throws it on the bed. "Here take it and go!"

Duo smiled and throws the bottle beside the box, then took the box. Serena took the bottle and sat down in her window sit. Duo and Heero let themselves out. Heero stopped and turned around to look at the pretty girl. She was drinking the bottle down with shaky hands, A tear run down her face.

"Heero come on." Duo whispered as made there way back to they room. When they were safe. Duo looked at his clock beside his bed. "Look busy" he said tucking the box under his bed and looked like he was looking for something. The door opened and a nurse Heero had seen at the front desk stuck her head in. "Check" she said all to joyful.

"Were here Linda, were always here." Duo said looking up. The nurse shocks her head and closed the door. When Duo heard her footsteps down the hallway she pulled the box from it's hidden place.

They away check on us every hour or so to make sure we didn't escape." Duo said opening the box.

The thought of the change of getting out filled Heero's head. Duo was stuffing his face with the candy and things that were in the box.

"Has anyone?" Heero asked softly so no one would hear.

"Has anyone what?" Duo asks between bite of candy.

"Has anyone ever escaped?" Heero asked.

"Only one person got out of here."

"Who" Heero asked.

Duo pointed to the box. "Serena, got out and went missing for almost a year before her sister found her and ordered the cops to bring her back, she had good reason to leave tho."

"Why is that?" Heero asked siting on his bed.

Duo looked up from the box. "That's right you don't know, You here until what your seventeen?"

"Eighteen what's that have to do with anything?"

"Serenity Peacecraft is stuck here until her 21 birthday."

Heero's heart sunk. "That poor girl." He mumbled under his breath.

"Yea" Duo finished the box and stuffed it under the bed and crawled under the covers. Heero watched him for a min then did the same, shutting off the lights he drifted into the dream of freedom.

"NO LET ME GO, NO STOP IT LEAVE ME ALONE, STOP!" The screams for help awoke Heero from his sleep. He looked over at the clock to see it was 2:15 A.M. He glanced over at his sleeping roommate to see him dead asleep and snoring loudly. Heero got up and opened the door slightly peering out into the dark hallway. Three men were carrying Serena down the hallway, she was screaming and kicking the whole way.

"They must have found out about our gift." Came a voice beside him he turned to see Duo standing beside him, still in his PJ, his long hair down. Duo smiled. "Don't worry tho They have got before and she never told where she got it from." Duo patted Heero on the shoulder and returned to bed within seconds the room was once again filled with his snoring. Heero returned to his bed and around six heard her cries as they took her back to her room. Then it was quiet once again. The nose in the hallway woke him up once again. "Check, time to get up is 7 already." The nurse called into the room, and then she shut the door and left once again. Heero turned to see Duo's bed unmade but empty. He got up and got dressed. He went down the hallway to the dinning room where he saw Quatre, Duo, Trowa and Wufie siting at they normal table. It had been the first time Heero had seen Trowa out of his room. He looked but found the window where Serena sat empty.

Duo seemed to see Heero looking because he said. "She never comes out in the morning only for dinner then it's right back into her room, She's like a vampire only coming out after dark to feed."

Wufie, Duo and Quatre laugh.

Heero picked up his plate and made his way down the girl's room until he came to Serena's door.

He knocked on it.

"GO AWAY!" Serena's voice said. Did he crying through the door? He was sure he did. He reached down and grabbed the handle of the door and found the door unlocked. He opened the door and peered in. The curtains were drawn and the room was bathed in darkness but through the light in the hallway Heero could see Serena lying on her bed she was crying. She looked up she the door opened her eyes red from tears. "I don't know who you are but I said go away."

Heero came in and shut the door behind him. "My name is Heero Yuy, I brought you some food."

Heero sat the food on the desk. "I'm not hungry." Serena mumbled looking up at Heero. Her face was cold like stone. "I heard you used to me a soldier." Heero said looking at the photos again then around the room.

"Yea so" Serena replied watching Heero walk around her room. As Heero walked past her desk he hit it which made a CD player start playing. A woman's singing felled the room. Heero heard that voice before. Then it hit him that was Serena's voice. Serena jumped up and turned the CD player off turning to look at Heero. "What do you want"

"I want to help." Heero said looking at her.

"Then go away." Serena said turning around.

Heero came up behind her and hugged her from behind. Serena turned around to look at him. He looked into those bright blue eyes and fell in love. She tried to lower her head in shame but Heero caught her chin with one of his fingers and lifted it so they were looking into each others eyes then he brought his head closer and kissed her softly on the lips. He felt her melt into the kiss. Their arms wrapped around each other. Heero reached over and turned the CD on before lying down on the bed with Serena.

Heero awoke to find Serena in his arms. He smiled for the first time since he came here. "Maybe this won't be so bad." He thought kissing Serena's sweaty head. She awoke and smiled up at Heero.

"Hi"

"Hi"

She laid her head on Heero chest; she could hear his heart beat. "Herro?"

"Hn"

"Will you always remember me this way?" Serena said lifting her head to look at Heero.

"What are you talking about?" Heero asked rising an eyebrow.

"Heero I'm dying, They found out I have a sickness that has no cure. The doctors say I only have a year or so left." Serena informed Heero laying her head back on Heero's chest. He ran her hands through her hair.

"Don't talk like that Serena, your going to get out of here, and when we get out were going to have to go out on a real date."

Serena laughed and Heero's heart sank at that sound. He seemed to know that this poor girl would never leave this building. He kissed her head again.

Just then the door opened and a nurse stuck her head in the door. "Check"

She saw Heero and Serena and didn't say a word just stuck her head back out.

"KUSO I forgot about the damn Checks." Serena said jumping up out of the bed and throw Heero his clothing. Heero dressed quickly and left the room making his way down the hallway to the living room, where Duo, Quatre, and Wufie sat watching TV. Heero sat down beside Duo.

He looked over at him then lends close to Heero.

"Have fun?"

Duo, Quatre, and Wufie laughed. They heard a door slam and looked up to see the head nurse Jan storming towards them, she didn't looked too happy and sees carried a paper in her hand. Three other nurses headed down the Women's rooms to Serena's room.

"You've only been here two days but you're already causing trouble." The nurse stopping in front of the TV.

"YO, Nurse Jan you make a better door then you do a window." Duo joked trying to look around the large women to the TV. "Shut up Maxwell."

Duo looked hurt at that.

Heero looked back to see the nurses come back to the main desk.

Heero turned back to the head nurse angry in his eyes.

"Your lucky you got this." The nurse yelled throwing the paper at Heero and walked away. Heero watched her walk away then took the paper reading it to his self.

"What is it Heero?" Quatre asked looking at paper.

"The courts have found out I'm not guilty, I've been released." Heero said looking at the paper. He heard someone behind him and turned to see Serena running down the hallway to her room.

Heero started to get up but Duo pushed him back down.

"Leave her be, she knew that this day would be coming." Trowa said watching the door shut behind Serena.

Heero watched then sighted getting up to go pack his things.

Heero stood at the front gate surrounded by his friends all saying their goodbye. Serena wasn't with them. Heero looked up the hallway but only saw a closed door. "She said she couldn't come. It was too hard." Quatre said looking at Heero.

"We'll never see you again, we'll we Heero?" Duo asked his eyes filled to the rims with tears.

"That's not true, Duo. You'll get out of here and you'll come see me. All of you." Heero said smiling.

"The Taxi is here, Heero." A nurse said opening the gates to let Heero out. Heero went through the gates and stopped to smile and wave goodbye at his new found friends before getting in the cab and driving away.

Heero: I only stayed in the Yomen Home for the Mental Ill for two days but I found my true friends there. A year after I was let out Quatre and Trowa was let out. Then a month later Duo. We see each other all the times. I never saw Serena Peacecraft again. I found out that she never did get out of Yomen, She died in her sleep from the sickness that was in her body, three days before her 21 birthday, and a week after her death Relena Peacecraft took an overdose on pills and killed her self. Serena was later found to be a hero and was buried with honors. To her and the rest who helped me to live out my life, I thank you.
