Fate's Daughter
by Moonlight Shadows
Chapter 1
The afternoon on the L2 colony was as bright as any day on Earth, just artificially so. It was a Sunday, and, by popular demand, the storm generators were turned off, thereby removing any chance it might rain.
So, as Quatre Rabbaba Winner stepped out into the sunshine, he could clearly see the city unfold before him. Media crowded on the bottom step of the council building, anxiously waiting for Princess Relena to come out and give a report on what had happened within. Beyond them, the young pilot, and now leader of all his fathers holdings, could see the parks and small lakes the colony boasted.
He gave a small sigh of relief to be out of the stuffy atmosphere. All in all, the day had been long and filled with debates and lectures. Everything was going well for Relena and her supporters. Now she would have to be on her own when discussing the controversy over the defenses available to both the colonies and the Earth. His part had ended with the decision to begin rebuilding new colonies, and he wasn't disappointed about not staying for the rest.
Suddenly, the door behind him opened and another figure stepped out into the bright light. Wufei Chang looked different from this morning. His eyes gleamed with a new light that had seemed dead after the destruction of his gundum, Shenlong.
"How did it go?" A small smile formed on the young Chinese man's face as he leaned back against the concrete wall.
"Very well. They will rebuild my colony which was destroyed." The smile turned into a genuine grin. "I will have a home to protect once more, thanks to you and your donation." Quatre grinned back.
"There's no need for thanks, my friend, I'm happy for you. The people of the colony will be proud." The other pilot nodded.
"I hope to live up to those expectations." For a moment they both lapsed into a peaceful silence. Then Wufei eyed Quatre as if debating whether or not to tell him something. The blond pilot raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Sighing, Wufei shrugged.
"Do you think they'll," he nodded his head in the direction of the building, "want us to rebuild the Gundams as defense?" Quatre laughed. When the other pilot looked at him as if he'd gone mad, he laughed harder. Now it was Wufei's turn to raise a brow.
"I didn't think I'd made a joke." Quatre fended off his anger by shaking his head.
"No, no, don't get me wrong. I just thought it was amazing how we think alike as pilots." He ran a hand through his hair and stared out at the colony without really seeing it. "I don't know if they will, but I do know that the decision is a tough one. The Gundams originally represented rebellion-"
He was interrupted by the door opening and Lt. Noin walking out. The photographers and reporters below grouped anxiously together, bellowing questions and flashing cameras. Noin smiled and waved to the crowd, then held the door open for the ones who followed. She gave Quatre a grin and a wink as she stood by him. Sally Po was the next friend who came out, and held the other door, smiling at Wufei. Then, followed by the leaders of the colony, Princess Relena came out to face the world with the decisions that had been made.
She looked older and sharper then she had when they had first met. I guess being in love with someone who never stays put does that to you, Quatre mused. Then he laughed at himself for being too much of a romantic. He stepped up next to her.
"Nervous?" He was rewarded with a warm smile.
"Dreadfully." He reached out and gave her hand a friendly squeeze, noticingWufei come up to the other side and do the same.
"There is no dishonor in letting the bodyguards of a princess go first. Right, Desert Noble?" He smiled in amusement at his nickname for Quatre and, letting go of her hand, strode down the steps. Quatre quickly followed, his heart warming at the relief that had crossed Relena's face.
He was almost down the steps when he saw the man. Large and intimidating, he wore a trench coat and hat to hide his features. It was way too hot for that sort of outfit. Hissing a small breath out, he tried to signal to Wufei, but the young Chinese man was already cutting a path through the reporters. Noin and Sally were walking behind Relena, talking softly to her. She was down the steps and at the reporters now.
Quatre shouted a warning just as the man took out a gun. Shots rang out in the air. Both men and women screamed as blood suddenly spilled onto the pavement below Relena. As she collapsed, the crowds rushed in, blocking Quatres way. He couldn't see where the killer had gone, but he was sure the man was still in the crowd. He ducked and dodged people frantically, making his way to the street, as he was sure the dark man was doing. When he got to the end there was nothing. He had failed.
He turned around to see Wufei and Noin trying to push the crowds back. He couldn't see Sally, which meant she was seeing to Relena's wounds. Relena. He swayed with checked emotion. This couldn't be happening. He tried to catch Wufei's eye to tell him the man had escaped.
He managed eye contact a second before pain exploded in his head and he lost consciousness.
Wufei saw the man come up behind Quatre. Saw the blow that struck the boy down. He snarled in rage at the people blocking him, effectively making them, as one, step back.
Noin saw Wufei snarl and looked to see what it was directed at. She gasped as she saw two men throw an unconscious Quatre into a waiting car, which screamed away at top speed.
She turned to Wufei, only to see him rush off into the crowd, violently shoving people out of his way. When he got down to street level, he jumped onto his motorcycle and took off at the same speed as the car he was following, weaving in and out of traffic like a madman.
Static came over the small walkie-talkie on her belt.
"Noin!? Woman, are you there?" Ignoring the "woman" thing with some effort, Noin yelled into the talkie.
"Wufei what the hell do you think your doing!? In case it escaped your notice, we have a situation here!" His smart ass remark nearly made her scream.
"The heir to the entire Winner fortune has just been captured. You do not consider this a situation as well? Besides the ambulance, which I hear now, will not fit me. I will follow the kiddnapers and report later. Over and out."
"Wufei!? Wufei!?" She hung the machine back on her belt with disgust. Mostly because she knew he was right. "Damn you. I hate it when you do that."
Sighing, she climbed into the ambulance with Sally, who gave her a worried look. Noin gave her a small shake of the head to tell her she hadn't gotten anywhere with the headstrong 05 pilot. The doctor bit her lip over her friend and sat back as the ambulance started moving. All they could do now, for both the boys and for Relena, was sit back and wait.~
So?? What did you think??*dives over desk as angry Relena and Quatre fans through things at her* OK OK look your just going to have to wait to see what happens K?? I cant give you everything!
