CHAPTER ONE

*******

Melanie stood in front of the bathroom mirror, scrutinizing her wardrobe for the hundredth time. Usually, she would just throw something on, and that was that, but tonight, tonight was different. Tonight her boyfriend of two years would be coming home from tour, and she had a surprise for him, she was three months pregnant.

She had found out a couple of weeks ago that they would be expecting their first child, but knowing that Joey would be coming home soon, she had decided to wait until they got reunited before springing the news on him.

"Don't, Don't let me be the last to know." Anytime Melanie was in a good mood she'd sing, and today, nothing could bring her good mood down, not even the fact that Joey was a half-n-hour late. "I need to hear you say, you need me all the way, so if you love me, don't..don't let me be the last to know."

As she hit a high note, the doorbell rang, sending a tingly feeling down her body. Running towards the door, she briefly stopped to do a quick check in the hallway mirror, before opening the door, and finding...."Lance?"

Before she had a chance to ask him what he was doing there, he pulled a pink and blue beanie baby teddy bear out from behind his back, and gave her the cheesiest grin she'd ever seen. "Ma-Ma!"

Melanie couldn't help but laugh as she pulled Lance into the house, and wrapped her arms around him. "Ahh, I cannot believe you!" she exclaimed.

Lance chuckled at her comment. "I hope that's a good thing," he said, releasing her from his arms, and handing her the teddy bear. "can I come in or is Jo-Jo already here?"

Melanie shook her head, "He'll be here soon, but you can come in..just...stop spoiling me."

Lance chuckled as he closed the door behind him, and followed Melanie into the living room. "Believe me, there's more where that came from."

Melanie smiled at the thought. "I'm sure there is, but let's just wait till I tell Joey the big news before making this place a small Toys R. US, okay?"

Lance chuckled but agreed as the two got comfortable on the living room couch, and began to catch up on what had been going on since they had last seen each other.

"So, how's the job?"

Melanie smiled. "It's going well, really well. I just love teaching kids so much, and it's like ever since the doctor told me that I was pregnant, I can't help but love my job even more, y'know what I mean?"

Lance nodded, knowing exactly what she meant because he felt the same way about his job...minus the being pregnant part. "Maybe the guys and I could stop by at the center sometime, and do something with the kids, if that's okay with the administration board and all."

Melanie couldn't help but beam at the idea, "I think it'd be a great idea, I know the kids would love it. Hell, I love it," she said laughing. They were silent for a few seconds, but then Melanie spoke up again. "You know, I still can't believe you guys are home for two months, finally some quality time with my future babies daddy."

Lance couldn't help but chuckle at the statement. "You know I still can't believe my best friends are having a baby. I swear there's got to be some law about little Fatones running around the street."

Melanie giggled at the thought. "I'm sure there is...somewhere."

Lance chuckled as the phone began to ring, and Melanie quickly got up out of her seat to get it.

"Joey?" Melanie asked, knowing who it was before he spoke.

"Yeah.....it's me."

Melanie turned around, and signaled to Lance that she'd be back, before walking into the kitchen with the cordless. "About time you called, I was getting a little worried. Are you almost here?" she asked, not being able to wait until she was in the arms of her boyfriend.

"That's why I called, I-uh-think we need to talk."

Joey's serious tone caused Melanie's smile to drift off her face, and become a worried frown. "What's going on? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine..but...."

Fear was settling into her throat. She couldn't tell if he was hurt, or if he was in trouble, but by his voice she could tell something was wrong. "Jo, what is it?"

"Melanie, I've met-"

"Who's on the phone, baby?"

Melanie almost dropped the phone as she heard a female pick up the other line. 'Baby?'

After a little bit of commotion, and hearing Joey tell someone to 'hold on', she finally heard him come back to the phone. "Melanie?"

"Joey? Who was that?"

There was a brief pause but when Joey spoke again, Melanie thought she had been hit with a ton of bricks, "That-That was Angela, my-uh...fiancee."

Melanie dropped the phone as the words came out of Joey's mouth. Hearing him say that to her caused her heart to feel like it had stopped. She instinctively grabbed the kitchen wall, hoping that it would keep her from falling over, and keep her from losing her sanity. "His fiancee?"

Tears began to well up in her eyes as she ran those two words through her head, 'His fiancee..His fiancee.'

She lost her grip on the wall as her sobs continued, and her body began to shake. As she fell to the floor, and began to hyperventilate, the only thought that went through her head was..."What about our baby?"

"There he is!"

Recognizing the familiar voice, Lance stood up from the chair he was sitting in, and looked down the hall to where Chris, Justin, Bobbie, JC, and Dani were quickly rushing towards him.

Dani immediately threw her arms around Lance as soon as she got to him. "We came as fast as we could."

Never seeing Dani this worked up before, Lance briefly nodded into her shoulder before pulling away, and letting Chris pull Dani into his arms.

"How is she?" JC asked, in a concerned tone.

Lance wiped away the single tear that made it's way down his face, and gave the group his best 'fake' smile. "She's awake..."

"But.....?" Dani asked, urging her friend to continue.

"But....they'll have to keep her in for observation," he said, causing everyone to sigh with relief.

"Can we see her?" Bobbie asked after a second.

Lance nodded, and gave Bobbie the door number to Melanie's room. Waiting until Dani and her made their way down the hallway, and out of his sight, Lance flopped back down in the seat he had rested in before, and buried his face in between his hands.

"She's three months pregnant," he said, without looking up to the three guys who stood, towering over him, watching his every move.

"Oh God," Justin said, causing him to finally look up at his friends. "Is it...is the baby...?"

Lance shook his head. "The baby's alive, but the doctors think it might have suffered head trauma from the fall Melanie took."

Each one of his friend's faces contorted into the same look as Lance's, as they tried to digest this unbelievable news.

"Where's Joey?" Chris spoke up for the first time, realizing that the father of the baby wasn't anywhere to be seen.

Lance shrugged. "I don't know, he's not answering his cell phone." He didn't bother telling the guys that before Melanie had passed out, Joey had been on the phone with her, and when Lance had found her passed out on the floor, and picked up the phone, Joey had muttered the word 'sorry' before hanging up the phone, and leaving Lance with a dial tone.
