AR180B FAQ

Flash Suppressor

The Armalite AR180B incorporates an integral muzzle brake which does a good job of controlling muzzle rise. The brake has six holes, three at the 2 o'clock and three at the 10 o'clock position. The stock brake controls the muzzle flip by directing the gases up and to the sides, in doing so it also directs the muzzle blast and noise up and to the sides. This in turn creates the illusion that the rifle is very loud, mainly to the person using the rifle. It is debatable whether or not a flash suppressor makes the rifle seem quieter to the shooter, but it sure looks nice.

To install a flash suppressor one must first thread the barrel to accept it. This is best done by taking the rifle to a competent gunsmith who should know what to do. Be sure to remember that the barrel must maintain 18.5 inches of length or you will have created a prohibited firearm! The barrel length is legally measured from the bolt face to the end of the rifled portion. This length on the AR180B is 18 1/4 inches, 1/4 inch too short. How ever, the integral muzzle brake has been counted as part of the barrel and this brings the barrel length up to legal length. When cutting the muzzle brake one must remember to leave 18.5 inches of barrel. Cutting the barrel back to the where the rifling ends (which is by definition the barrel length) will create a prohibited firearm. Please, be sure to maintain legal barrel length.
