As I turned my head my smile got wider and wider. Who knew that the very guy that I watched pour all of his determination into a sport unknown to most Americans would be dancing with me? "What's your name?" he asked. Of course it took me a few minutes to regain consciousness and to try not to pull a George Bush and mispronounce some words. I told my self that if I ever met him that I would keep my questions and answers short for this simple reason. "Kathy !" I said trying to scream over the music.
"Do you wanna go get a drink?" he asked. He grabbed my hand directing me through the bunches of dancers. I turned to my group of friends still dancing with some group of guys that had migrated toward them, and they gave me a smile and they mouthed to me to tell them all of the details later. As he ordered my drink I my mind was flying. How could this happen? This is so freakin' crazy! What if he asks for my number? (Of course I was going to give him my number! Hello!) Is he going to be what I expected him to be? I turned back toward the bar to where he was standing. He looked so cute in his green silk shirt and black dress pants. He was a little sweat, but hey who wouldn't be after dancing for hours in a club? As he finished ordering our drinks he opened his mouth to speak. "Do you come here often?" he asked me trying to start up a conversation.
"Well no. My friends think that I need to come out of the house. They practically dragged me out. Supposedly I am not the part animal that I use to be. Whatever that means. But who could be? I mean I have to worry about college and what I am gonna major in. It is so hard. But I don't know what they are talking about." I said. I suddenly realized that what I had said was a little too serious for this very situation. I started to do my infamous nervous laughter. I couldn't even believe that he would sit through my rambling speech! What a nice guy.
"I know how that is." Apolo said simply. Maybe he did and maybe he didn't know how it was, but hey at least he was being nice about it. "Do ya wanna go back to the dance floor?" We gulped our drinks down. Apolo had a mustache from his drink, but I didn't tell him because it looked so adorable.
"Yes! I thought you would never ask! This is my song!" I said. You don't have to call ¦ It's okay girl ¦ 'Cause I'm gonna be alright tonight ¦ "Are you kidding me! This is the jam!" said Apolo with enthusiasm. I just laughed to myself. He sounded like my sister and me actin' ghetto. He grabbed my hand and directed me toward the floor.
What a dancer! As the song changed to 'Saturday' by Ludacris, he really broke out his best moves. And I thought he was only a break-dancer. There was so little that the media knew. He made these quick pace movements with his legs. After a few moments I tried to mimic his dance moves. (Keyword I tried) Then he went around me in a circle. He took my arm and twirled me around. The song changed and of course, we were sweatier than we were before we got our drinks so we were both grateful that the song had a slower tempo. I need a girl to ride, ride ¦ I need a girl to make my wife¦ Apolo got behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder. That was nice. As the song progressed I guess we both ended getting so into the song that as my group of friends that I arrived with slowly tapped me on the shoulder and told me that they were leaving! Like I knew that they were actually leaving! All the dancers on the floor that was the last song so it's time to leave the floor ¦ That means you two left on the floor ¦
"Uh Kathy? I think the announcer meant us." said Apolo whispering into Kathy's ear.
"Hmmm.." said Kiki just starting to relax in Apolo's arms.
"No, seriously it's time to go."
"Oh, no! I was suppose to get a ride with my friends and stay overnight!"
Well lets leave the club and then we can figure out what we are gonna do from there." We walked out of the club being followed by his sleepy entourage. As we walked out we stood there enjoying the cool summer air.
"Okay what do you want to do?" said Apolo. "You could come and get something to eat with me, or I could drop you off at your friends house. "
"Well..." I said, not wanting to leave. "Or you could, just stay with me tonight..." said Apolo. Okay ladies this is Apolo Ohno. And no I am not dreaming he asked me back to his hotel room. Normally this is against my policies. Hello I work for Planned Parenthood as a safe sex speaker! I know my boundaries! But this is Apolo Ohno! He stood there patiently waiting for my answer.
"Sure I come out with you to eat." I said finally. "I think I skip my friend's house too.." I said with confidence. Hello people! I know my boundaries! I repeat I know my boundaries!
"Okay lets go." Apolo said with relief. He extend his arm out. Hey where was his arm going! Hello! I have boundaries Apolo!
"Let me open the door for you." he said. Calm down Katherine I thought. What a gentleman.
"Lets go to this great place I know!" I exclaimed as he closed the door behind us.
