Whale Watching

 

Introduction:
Whales are some of the biggest mammals on the planet. During this treasure hunt you'll get opportunity to learn about many different species of whales. So get ready to get wet!
The Big Question:
Now that you have all this new knowledge on whales write a paragraph on what whale you'd like to be. Include three facts about the whale you picked.

Answers:

1.  A Cetacean is a group of mammals that spend their entire lives in water, and there are 77 species of Cetaceans.

2. Killer whales get their name because they are one of the top predators in the sea. They eat fish, squid, seals, sea lions, penguins, even other whales.

3.  Other characteristics of mammals are that they have fur or body hair, and all nourish their young with milk.

4. It takes 11 elephants to equal the size of a humpback whale. A humpback whale weighs 45 tons.

5. There are Baleen whales and Toothed whales. Three examples of Baleen whales would include Humpback, Grey, and Fin whales. Three examples of Toothed whales would include Killer, Sperm, and Minke whales.

6. The biggest whale is the Blue whale, and it weighs 190 tons.

7. The average life expectancy of a female killer whale is 50 years.

8. Whales communicate through a complex sequence of low moans, high squeals and clicking noises.

9. Products that are made from whales include cosmetics, shoe polish, margarine, transmission fluid, perfume, soap, leather for golf bags, car wax, and cat food.

10. Whales hear through holes behind their eyes.
